was down the M90 on sunday and it looks like they are gearing up to put speed cams up just past Dunfermline heading into Edinburgh.

so keep an eye out folks.

The new overhead gantries(sp) have the signs for speed cameras and the line marking in the carraigeway. Sneaky cameras hidden behind the gantry like they have down south.

Variable speed limits too.

Nice.

The system works much like a packet shaper (a technology to manage data congestion on computer networks).

It measures the speed on the road ahead (probably on the Forth Bridge in this case) and when it detects congestion, it applies a speed limit lower than the speed of that congestion a few miles back up the road. What this does is allows the congestion to clear forwards, before the faster traffic behind runs into the back of it and makes it worse. In theory, nobody ever reaches the back of a queue, nobody ever has to brake very much (which causes cars a few mile behind to have to stop completely), and all the traffic flows along at a reduced, but controlled/managed pace.

The system works in theory and I used the M42 most days, before and after it was installed. Prior to it being installed stationary traffic every day, after installation traffic flowing at 20-40 mph every day. Massive improvement.

It has stopped working now though for two reasons.

1. The cameras are visible on the gantries (look for the bottom of the camera box on approach) and they are not on every gantry. People have learned this and now only slow down for the gantry that has a speed camera on, then speed back up again. So if they make this mistake on the M90 also, as the cars pass Halbeath at 70mph ignoring the speed limit posted on the gantry, they are rapidly catching the stationary traffic on the bridge. When they get there they'll have to brake and eventually the queue will be all the way back to Halbeath again.

2. The powers that be won't leave the feckin' things alone to do their job. They should increase and decrease the speed limit automatically depending on the traffic conditions ahead, and switch themselves off when they are not needed. But the numpties in the control room think they know better, and set them all at a fixed speed for the duration of rush hour, and quite often forget to turn them off when they go home, so your travelling on a empty motorway at 2am, that is still subject to a 30mph speed limit.

i very rarely use the M90 now and use the orrock quarry road instead as it's just the same time but is much more enjoyable due to less numpties on it.

This is all part of the new crossing stuff along with the new bus lane that is being put in, so glad I rarely have to use that bit of the M90 :)

speed cameras... sigh.
you are riding behind some boy in his clio at eighty, and he looks up from youporn or whatever he is watching on his phone, see's the camera and panic brakes down to about sixty. It really grinds my gears.

Did you see in the paper that the french police officers have started vandalizing the speed cameras so they can spend time doing " real police work".

They think writing tickets for speeding is 'real police work' do they?

that and smoking le cigarettes. No, i think it was in 'cringe' The Sun, they reported that the french government admitted to using cameras to generate revenue so the police said F this and started to cover them up.

you know this and i know this but i would say 90% of the population using the M90 to commute don't.

i think the Scottish Government should do a propaganda film on DVD explaining how the system works and the benefit it would have on them if they stick to the rules then send it to all the registered car owners in the area who are likely to commute on that road.

Or just stick a camera box on every gantry so people stick to the posted limit, and stop manually messing with it and leave the thing alone to do it's job.
