View Full Version : Does your set of keys ruin your yoke/tank?

As above, starting to see my keys scratching a perfect circle on my yoke. My bunch of keys is fairly large too I guess..
So guys and gals, how big is your bunch and and clever ideas to help stop this?
Just use your ignition key, keep the rest in your pocket. Mine buzz on the yoke so I will be splitting them up.

I only have a single key in the ignition-----------a little tip,a large bunch of keys strains the ignition barrel over time due to vibrations, meaning loose and worn tumblers, resulting in a replacement barrel.

I have a heavy keyring engraved with sv650, makes it easy to find having so many keys. Its the only thing with the bike key. I have a billet custom top yoke, and funny enough it doesn't scratch at all.
The zzr has a black yoke, and has a circle scratched onto it. There's only a small disk lock key with the bike key. The Raptor only has a plastic loop with the key.

I have my ignition key on it's own on a key ring that has quick release. The rest stay in my pocket.

I've just found a keyring karabiner so I have put my ig key on it's on ring, so I can unclip it when I need to ride.

I have one of these as well, but it's quite heavy.

This. You should never have significant weight on car or bike keys.

I have a single ignition key on a leather fob, with an enamel Sv on one side and a velcro tab on the other.
I could have an opposite velcro tab on the yoke to stop it moving about, but I haven't botherd, no circle on my yoke, leather doesn't scratch it.
Big bunch of keys in my pocket

Yeah, used to have a Velcro patch on the alarm fob on the black Sv, with corresponding part on the yoke. Very useful. Stopped it jiggling about and breaking the only alarm fob for the bike......or losing it whilst riding!

Single key with a leather fob for me also-------------and a clip laynard with the other keys and remote for the alarm under my jacket so that it doesn't get wet.
I have ignition key, disc lock and luggage keys on mine. I have pushed a 10mm length of tube over the key to stop them scratching, just used some fishtank air line i had in the garage does the job :D
single key with a quick realise catch, my key is also a flip key for my alarm.

Seems the best way then is to get a Velcro patch and shrink my bunch!

Believe me single key is the way--------------I have had to replace so many ignitions for people who have key bunches on both cars and bikes.

Little stainless lanyard, green flexy plastic over it and a little stainless snapgate krab. Loop other keys onto wire to make a bunch.
Also good to loop around something on trackday so you don't lose keys in grass in a tumble.
Got loads of them if anyone wants one.

I'll have one!
I have a lanyard round my neck with all my main keys on, and ignition key is on a loop which i unclip so only have the ignition key actually in the ignition.

Damage was already done on mine!
Mine was hammered when I got my bike, so I bought a yoke protector. It's fake carbon fibre and it looks OK, but it's better than staring at a load of scratches!

Ignition, disc lock, chain and topbox keys on my bunch, with a leather keyring. Not noticed much scratching at all but then I've a silver top yoke. More fussed about my black renthals getting scratched but they seem alright after 2 years.
I use something like this (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Premium-SuperGrip-Spring-Keyring-Release/dp/B007XVKA1I/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1353841843&sr=8-4) on my main keyring, and detach/reattach the ignition key as needed. I wouldn't pay what's being asked in that link, I'm sure you can get them far more cheaply.

This, although I just have ignition and disc lock but the tubing fits perfectly on the disc lock key and stops scratching brilliantly. But damn, I thought my 'key glove' concept was unique - there is obviously another freak out there!

I just have my ignition key in the ignition and just a house key in my pocket / under seat. I try to have as few pointy metal things as possible on me just in case they do me damage if I fall off.

Ew, you disgust me. i am a shiny razor sharp scratchy key. Why would i be interested in a badly cut piece of nylon home brew/air tubing like you

Ooh la la. you fit me like a (key) glove. It is like we were made to be together. I am sorry i ever doubted your cheap plasticky ways. Never again will i sit alone scratching my yoke... Enough!
One key on a long Kawasaki lightweight webbing and rubber keyfob. I hate scratched top yokes with a passion and as this fob is so long it flaps over the speedo and keeps it clear to read as I ride in the rain.
House keys, luggage keys and any others live in the top compartment of my small tankbag, which goes everywhere with me when I'm on the bike.
To me nothing says "I couldn't give a rats ar5e about this bike" more than a top yoke that's got half the paint missing.

Really?
Blue anodised valve caps? Rim tape? Anything from motrax? There is FAR worse!
RimTape lol
The bloke who owned my SV before only ever put the key in the ignition with no other keys or a fob so it's pretty much spotless.

Single key method, purely because I cant stand the rattle of keys... how else are you meant to know if something important is rattling.

I have a mirror polished top yoke and around my ignition is a slight ring in the polished metal where my alarm fob has been. However, I have only one key on that loop and it gets put on a Krab with my other bike related keys when removed from the ignition. When riding the krab goes in my hand bag and this gets put in my tank bag on long trips or hung around my shoulder for short trips.
My tip, get a hand bag. It also gives you space for a disk lock, small chain lock, medium chain lock, ground anchor, guard dog and machine gun bunker. ;-)
Big blob of Blue tac on the yoke. Stick your other keys in it to stop them rattling around.
Any keys apart from the igintion key are kept in my pocket
