I don't understand why the copper didn't pull him over straight away after the first offense instead of following him allowing him to further break the law..

he was lucky to only get a £500 fine it could of been a lot worse so an extra £15 and he is probably thinking he got off lightly. I doubt anyone will care if someone with that much disregard for other people's safety is back on a bike any time soon

I don't believe the story he concocted for the reason he was doing what he was doing, only from a journalist!

He was probably working for More Crap News

And of course while the journo was putting his life and everyone else's at risk, it was perfectly safe for the copper to ride at that speed because of his incredible training. Which is pretty much the same as what you get on a ROSPA course...

Did anyone see the stats in MCN on the number of unmarked police sportsbikes involved in single-vehicle accidents, ie ones where the rider just binned it? Made for interesting reading...

Btw I'm not anti-police by any stretch of the imagination - just find police motorcyclists can be a bit hypocritical and often don't exactly practice what they preach.

No, it's not safe Chris.

It's not particularly safe to do a lot of things people are required to do in their job but it is often necessary.

Or would you have them let people get away with criminal acts as long as chasing them could be dangerous?

Cop should be in trouble for "baiting" should have pulled him over the minuet he was over the limit and not played "catch up" its only ever going to egg someone one.

That's muddying the waters there - the issue of police not chasing people if they fail to stop and start driving dangerously (which I would never agree with) is a completely different one. Anyway, plenty of documented cases of trafpol being clocked at 140/150 when not chasing anyone and simply 'testing the vehicles' capabilities'.

The point I was making is that actually, as long as certain conditions are met (no traffic relative to you, no junctions/exits/pedestrians/horses) riding at 160mph can be relatively safe. That's why trackdays are relatively safe and that's why the officer allowed him do it for so long before pulling him over - and probably rode in a similar way himself on the way home.

As Elliott said, unmarked police bikes do seem to make a habit of riding dangerously close behind other bikes to provoke a reaction. I've generally got a lot of respect for the police but in my experience, many (not all) police bikers have a 'do as I say, not as I do' attitude and are wrongly portrayed as having superhuman riding abilities, when they don't.

Just an observation though - fully appreciate that speed limits exist and you can't complain if you get caught breaking them.

By the way did you mean to post that link? Something seriously dodgy according to my antivirus.

Yeah, it's a news website. No idea what would be dodgy about it.

If the police are going to chase at those speeds as part of their job it would stand to reason that they would need to keep in practice at going those speeds. As to wether its safe or not' its safe to do over 20 or 30 mph past schools at most times of day, it's not legal though and that's all police care about.

Cop should be in trouble for "baiting".

Nah I think it serves the rider right, if someone accepts the bait then more fool them. No one makes the rider open it up some more.

And to be honest if your job involved upholding traffic laws etc wouldnt you egg someone on a bit, I bet a fair few would ;)

Not sure I agree with that - All the plod here care about is bumping their PPI's up - and the easiest way to do it? speed enforcement!! It wasnt legal to burgle my house - the plod didnt particularly care... It was illegal to steal our car and drive it without a licence or insurance and ram it into bollards - the plod cared so much they released the theiving little ******* without charge as he just said "no comment"... I could go on, but there's no point. The plod dont enforce safety issues, its revenue and fiddling the figures...

This is earmarked for victims of crime..... so even though there isnt a "victim" its just a tax...

Why? Next you'll say they shouldn't have bait cars to catch criminals who break into cars to steal sat navs/stereos etc. To enforce the law, you need to catch those breaking it. You don't have to race, you don't have to keep up. Its all about choice and being sensible. Go to Jap Fest at Castle Combe and watch how many people get baited by the Police on the roads around it.

Following someone is significantly different to racing down a dual carriage way at 160mph

Obv you wouldn't rise to it but I know a lot of lads that if they have a friendly biker playing catch up, they'll have a good laugh and then say hi at the next lights.

As a police officer he should have a duty of care to serve and protect mr joe bloggs so isnt it safer to pull him over the min he hits 68mph?
