Looking for an Android tablet for xmas.

The Kindle Fire HD at £160 looked perfect, until I had a play yesterday and realised it isn't really Android at all, but a glorified Kindle for multimedia, and you can't for instance watch your own movies off a Micro-SD card.

Must do everything an Android phone can do, except make calls.
7" is fine, bigger is fine too, must be nice and responsive as a touch screen
HD screen and Camera/Video
Can charge off a USB, or it comes with a car charger. Can be used and charged at the same time.
Has a Micro-SD slot supporting 32GB cards
Reasonable battery life, ie: 5 hours or more
Less than 200 quid
Bluetooth Audio capability would be nice
HDMI Out would be nice

Thanks

Have you looked at the Google Nexus 7?

My son has a Tabtronics M009S, cost me £94.99 but I think they are less now, check it out on Amazon, it runs ICS and does everything my Galaxy S2 mobile does, the 1ghz processor can be a bit laggy at times with 'heavy' apps but iplayer etc work well.

Here's the link, looks like they are out of stock with Tabtronics atm but others sell them, seems they have upgraded the processor to 1.2ghz: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Capacitive-Android-SANDWICH-Tablet-Responsive/dp/B006M07X34/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1354024608&sr=8-6

Oh and has HDMI out :)

Mines almost got what you want Ralph except

Can't charge off USB

I haven't found a Bluetooth dongle to work with it yet, but I haven't been looking for one

It'd charge off a suitable car charging adapter, so you could use it on the move

Up scales to 1080i via mini HDMI
Supports 32gb micro SD

Only £79

I'm more than happy with my tablet, for the price I paid

This is the newer model, with Jellybean

After seeing the countless customers moaning about them freezing permanently on watchdog a few weeks ago, I wouldn't touch any kindle ever.

That's the beauty of my tablet, I can get a Kindle app so I could still download a book to read on it.

Obviously it isn't as light, and doesn't have the features to read like the Kindle, but I prefer real books to be honest. Only if I was overseas, without any books to read would I consider downloading a book to read

The Nexus 7 has a weak point, the glass on the display cracks far too easily. The reason for this is screen lift caused by improper use of adhesive causing the two to separate, leading to weak points. Replacement screens aren't available yet and ASUS wants 75 quid to look at the device, then extra for labour, parts, etc.

If you buy it, get accident damage warranty as otherwise minor drops might render it useless.

Up for grabs and a nice Xmas pressie :)

It has a dent at the bottom left corner but this doesn't affect the screen or operation. Has a screen protector from day 1 and in a case as well.

Is running latest iOS and comes in its original box as well.

Oi! Never mind posting pictures, start your own for sale thread! What do you think this is, a fruit market?? ;-)

Any more suggestions for ANDROID devices are more than welcome.

PS: Been to a Gartner summit in London today, and thier projections for IOS are not good. They project Android will loose some market share to Windows in the phone market. Blackberry just dying away on phones and they didnt even bother to put RIM on the chart for tablets.

If you want an android tablet the nexus 7 is the best value one out there. You can even pick one up in places like HMV and it is the same price as directly from google.

Was looking at this very query recently for my other half. The conclusion I came to was that if you were technically adept, buying the Kindle Fire HD and then jailbreaking it and fitting standard Android was the best bang for the bug and a bit cheaper than the comparable Nexus. Then the Nexus was so low in price (£20 or so more, IIRC) that it wasn't worth the risk of bricking the Kindle/getting problems if you needed it warrantied.

This was 2 months back mind, knowing tech it'll all have changed by now. :)

Just bought both my daughter's - Samsung Tab2 7".

£158 form tesco and £30 cash back from samsung. Have to wait 2 weeks to register for cashback and then will take 6 weeks to get cash into bank.

Pro - Had a play on one, android apps work well, games run full speed and look good. Temple Run is very smooth, better than my Galaxy SII phone. Internet browser works well, even has tabbed browsing.

Con - screen resolution is not brilliant watching movies and the sound is not that loud. I only had a quick play, but compression / conversion of kung fu panda took 30 minutes and then picture was quite pixelated. Screen resolution is good generally for photo viewing etc, but not brill during video playback.

Battery life seems good. Not sure on hdmi - but don't think so.

Doesn't seem to do a lot more than a smart phone, but just bigger and easier to use due to screen size.
