View Full Version : Crashed! Damn Ice!
We've had some pretty bad snow today which in some parts has turned into sheets of ice. I managed to get from Team Valley to Killingworth without a hitch, until I tried to stop for a pedestrian crossing. Was going slow to begin with but wasn't going to stop in time just using engine braking so I used my brakes, very gently but I was on the floor a split second later.
Some guy did stop to help which was nice, thanks for that, although wasn't needed but nice anyway. Only damage is to the engine bars so all is good there. It wasn't until after I stood up I realised that the whole road was just a block of ice.
Only damage to me is that my left wrist has started hurting and seems to be getting worse but thats it. I have a video of the crash, not very exciting but I'll post it up anyway as soon as its ready.
Stay safe out there

I nearly went out on mine today but thought better of it and got the bus. It's just not worth the damage to you or the bike, I hope you get that wrist checked out sharpish, there's too many little bones in there that can easily be broken. Bad luck mate.

Glad you're not in a bad way. Any off you can walk away from is a good one.
Pooped myself this morning as I spotted a massive patch of ice on a corner I was headed for and barely passed. Think I'll be on the tram if things don't warm up overnight.
Same boat, excerpts I only made it 100 feet. My gear lever is now a bolt. No wonder I came off, I couldn't stand up on the road it was that icy.

Sorry to hear this. Chin up mate. Be positive and get back out there.
Thanks. This hasn't fazed me about bikes and my confidence hasn't taken a hit which is good. Still rode it home after that. Just a little annoyed it took 2 hours to travel ~15 miles just to come off right near home.
Video is up now. As you will see, the off is nothing special. Doesn't even look that bad and to be honest it wasn't. Just must have landed a little awkward on my wrist.

That is a lot worse than the ice I hit, did you get the guy to give you a lift up with the bike, looks like he did in the video. I had to, I tried on my own, is there some technique to doing it alone?

To be fair that road looks absolute sh1te. And at night too, recipe for disaster. Glad you've not come off too badly.
I'm not sure. The CB is really light anyway.

Agh that video, I remember the noise, it goes right through you, scraping plastic, I've been knocked twice an dropped it a few times too, never a good experience. I remember dropping my bandit, I couldn't get it up, looked like a right fool, some guy ran out of his house to help in the end...eugh, embarrassment

youtube/google is your friend.
face away from bike seat,
bend leg and hold bike.
lift with legs, and its up,
REMEMBER TO PUT YOUR STAND DOWN AGAIN ! before you let go.

I can imagine this will be very difficult in the snow, as there would be very little grip with the snow and ice :/

yeah but after you get your weight and the bikes you should have abit of traction from the weight of everything? ... guess someone could always test it out? ;)

I fell off in 2007. She talks sense as she has to listen to me whinging about the fact that my thumb doesn't work properly when the ambient temperature is below about 15 degrees. Not nice crunchy noises. Reckon it's got a few years but my wrist will eventually need fusing, deep joy.
Get it checked out yeah...

I would of carried on through the red . Hope your ok. Not a single bit of snow here :s
There was a mini roundabout up ahead that I needed to turn right on so I could have easily come off there instead. The whole road including the roundabout was a solid block of ice. I pushed the bike up past the roundabout after that then rode it the rest of the way home.
The thing that made it worse was that the road was all bumpy where the ice had formed unevenly.
All is good and my wrist doesn't hurt as much as yesterday.

Really unlucky mate. Rear brake only in those conditions though at those speeds. Looks like you applied front. Rear would've just locked the back up and you probably would've stayed on. I bet that guy felt guilty for using the traffic lights. ;)
I would have used the rear brake if it was working properly. Haven't had the chance to sort it out as it's always pitch black before and after work. The rear brake sticks on if I use it, getting it sorted at the weekend when there's some daylight hours I can use.

Must admit, mine is lame too. I would've had to have used the front and would've been on my face too.
Yeah. My commute to work was fine. It started snowing heavy around 11am and this is what was left.
People were abandoning their cars because they were getting stuck in traffic and on the ice. Someone from my work took 7 hours to get home and that was after leaving their car and walking the rest of the way. Took me 40 minutes to go half the length of the Team Valley Trading Estate, didn't want to filter as I could barely keep the bike upright as it was cause of the black ice.
Not as bad today and tomorrow is still looking OK so hopefully I can make it into work and get back home OK.

Tried it back in 2010 when I had the blue pointy after I came off in snow. Doenst matter what trick you use you're not going to pick it up without leverage. I pushed it around for quite a while trying to lift it, when lifting you lift by pivoting the edge of the wheels and when they're sliding away from you all you achieve is pushing it away. To lift on ice how you say K1ngy you'd end up sat on your back side with your back against the seat. Works every other time but not when you've got zero traction for leverage.
I eventually got mine on its wheels again by clearing a line in the snow right along the kerb edge, i lifted the bike high enough so only the rubber of the wheels remained in contact with the road and slid it across the snowy road upto the kerb (2m max) with both wheels against the kerb I had the leverage I needed and sure enough pop up it went on to its rubber.

One of the things I love about the SV is that it's so light and you can just pick it straight up off the floor like it's a pushbike.
Has been handy when I've dropped it in the shed and there's not enough room to do the reverse bum crawl trick.
Sorry to see that glad your ok ish and bike is ok ish.

It appears that with the right training, you can actually pick two bikes up at once -

Bad luck old boy! Lesson learnt! Riding on ice requires practice, I have had mates fall off behind me in icy conditions, smoothness is the key, high gear, low revs and V-gentle braking! Also good forward observation.
Many people will say stick to fair weather riding but I had a crash a few years ago on a red hot summers day (2003 I think, the year the pavements and roads melted?) just started to spit with rain and a woman in a mini pulled out in front of me, I grabbed a handful of front brake and POW! Ate the tarmac!
Happens to the best of us, glad for you it hasn't shaken your confidence.;)

Oh dear!!
Glad you bought the CB now?
Had fun servicing the rear drum brake? Surprised you got that far as the roads were dire around Gateshead and a joke in Newcastle
If I had used the SV that day I would have just left it in the warehouse at work, no way would I have chanced riding through that on the SV. Almost did a complete 180 just trying to get out of my parking space.
Haven't serviced the rear brake yet, was working today which I hadn't planned. Getting it done Sunday though as well as fitting a Tutoro and cleaning it up a little.

Then they be talking out of their bottoms, clearly they've never experienced a ride on a crisp winter's day on deserted roads, it's sheer bliss.
