Some of my mp3 files have song/artist info attached to them. Others do not, and Windows won't let me add any (clicking around the file properties>details tab does not give me the chance to type in info; maybe it's protected?).
All the music details are correct in my Windows Media Player. Is there any way I can tell my computer to take the song info from WMP and attach it all to the files themselves? Latest WMP and Windows 7 being used.
Thanks!

Right click on a song title, there should be a 'Find album info' in the pop-up menu that appears. WMP then goes to search some music info site to find songs with same name and artist etc, you then get to choose the info to update it with. This gets you the artwork and all that jazz.
If the above does not work there is an 'edit' option in the pop-up menu.

The info is called the "tags". It's separate from and nothing to do with filename. You can add it manually, singly or in batch. Some progs will do it more slickly I think, like MediaMonkey etc.
Go to a music file in your documents, right click on the file and a window opens, click "properties", "summary", and it should show a list (table) of titles/properties etc for Artist, track, genre etc. You can left click on the field and enter the info you want.
Note that even slight differences will confuse the PC, so "The Who" will be different to "the Who". If you want to keep stuff together it's best to copy/paste to ensure exact copies of names etc.
To batch info, for example to put an artist and album name on a bunch of tracks, select all the tracks in the directory, right click as before, properties/summary, and then you can add artist and album, the track field should be inactive.
Once entered, this info should then show up attached to the filename in the details listing.

There are a number of tag editors out there in internet land. At work so cannot look at the one I have installed.
Some can be quite clever and allow you to make changes to titles and tags based on folder names, track numbers etc.

Thanks team! So, there is no way to say "PC, please take all the "title" and "artist" info I have put into Windows Media Player and make the files' ID3 tags correspond"? Instead of doing it artist-by-artist? I have many thousands of songs..
