Please educate me! :-)

Background; I need some for long distance night vision in very dark/moonless foggy nights. seeing 30 yards is no good. I need to be able to see everything like daylight

Purpose. I have to get rid of Coyotes. Quite a few of them and they'll be 250 yard+ shots and I have to find them on 800 three and cleared acres without getting eaten by Wolves, Bears and Cougars. Sounds easy enough :-)

So what do you know about Night vision toys?

dont the bears cougars and wolves scoff the coyotes? and why not shoot the others as well?

Is this for hunting?? Or what is the actual need? And what are you willing to spend? Night gear is far from cheap.

are you after a Scope, or just NVG's two very different things :0/

Quite possibly both Richie. But goggles first.

Savage, mainly for spotting and not getting eaten.

Coyotes kill anything on the property from Calfs to sheep to foals to chickens to cats and dogs. Bears and the other stuff don't... with maybe the exception of cougars but they are very rare. Coyotes are bloody everywhere.

I'm going to have to pay wheatever it costs to get what I need...

In my mind googles are rather cumbersome for most how about something like this?

I have to be able to drive an ATV (with no lights on) with them so it's got to be hands free. And when it gets dark here it gets really, really dark. The nearest city is an hour away. the nearest village is 20 minutes away so absolutely no light pollution. It's pitch black.

The stars must look incredible Carl :D

Aparently they're "big and bright" in Texas too. [/derail]

They are Paul. And they change too. Some nights its just a glow of billions and billions and billions of little pin *****s of light with a fantastic view of the Milky Way like you've never seen it before. Other nights you can only see the bright stars and they look like they're painted on a jet black curtain, yet they are still incredibly bright and clear.

But all of it pales when compared to the Northern lights! We get those regularly and have to be seen to be appreciated. Film doesn't do them justice!

Is there a minimum number of nights stay at your place carl? I had some couch surfers from canada stay with me (from Calgary Alberta) back in September and they want me to go over next year, plus also got a mate in Ottawa - where abouts are you based now and have you got a website?

i'm no expert by any means, but i thought night vision stuff worked only when there was a little bit of light there. would just the stars be enough light for them to work?

Two nights minimum if you stay in the tents.
... Unlimited nights if you stay with us! :-)

I've seen some people using NV by mounting a fairly normal monocular to the back of a rifle scope.
Presume you will be using at least .223 so it may be an issue whether the scope and mounting is man enough to handle that. Good thing is it gives you your choice of optics.

Depends on the type. You're not fussed about Ivan in his T-72 shooting back so you can use an infrared illuminator.

Just a thought but if they're that skittish that some low/red headlights on an ATV will spook them then the mechanical noise surely will.

So move with headlights, then just move in stages and stop to spot the quarry with the rifle scope. Can you bait them in? Lamp them from a vehicle? etc.

Personally I would use an Infra Red Illuminator such as the Pulsar 940 , then mount an Infra Red capable Bullet-Cam on a weaver rail so that it is in line with your scope , send the output to a DVR and mini screen . Battery Pack velcroed to the Butt of the Rifle .

Personally , there is nothing any good on the market that doesn`t cost a fortune . One thing that did catch my attention was the Laser Genetics ND3 Designator which was a nice hunting aid for targetting at night , but you would still need some sort of spotting system .

Thanks Badger, That's the kind of info i was looking for.

Is it worth looking at 1st generation stuff at all or should it be 2nd or 3rd generation. I'm not scared of spending money for the right unit but do i really have to spend $10,000 to get something that works or can i get something for half that that'll work just as well?

I like the look of the laser doo-hickey!

1st Gen stuff is very blurry , you would be very unhappy with lashing out dough on it . Gen 2 is not that much better , then you get into the next Gen and the money shoots right up . This is why the Civvi gear is basically worthless as a hunting tool . The tubes can be a pain in the arris to source as well . As I said before , a good scope and some sort of homebrew setup will get you great results . Let me have a mooch about and I will find a few links for you .

I run an Nvsupplies digital add on scope to my rifles to hunt in the dark

IMO digital is far superior to a tube set up for a new user because it is incredibly easy to shag them with anything other than very, very dark environments. The slightest bit of light and they can burn out!
I use an N1000 Ir laser for illumination up to 200 yards. But if i were you i would stalk a bit better and go for the Nitesite NS200, its a hell of a piece of kit

Anything much beyond that and youre into gen 3+ gear which is Thousands of pounds/dollars

A "Homebrew" setup that hits the nail on the head .
