Yeehaa! Scary stuff - but I bet the pilots get a buzz from that sort of action!

You earn your buttons as a pilot landing in those conditions I bet, imagine being on the plane getting rolled around like that?
I've been on small jets in storms which were dropping altitude very quickly and that was scary enough.
Awesome - it looked like a model shot from an old Red Dwarf episode: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kruJa_pm2h8

KLM flights from Rotterdam back to Heathrow use Fokker 50 prop jobbies - following jets on final approach is real white knuckle time. Yee haa indeed! First time was a shock, after that I just sat back and giggled at the people around me who were themselves first timers.

Looks like my Dash 8 landing in the Farnborough simulator.
On the debrief everyone got an appraisal. Mine was 'nobody died'

Nothing too hideous. Crosswind landings are great fun, it's just a matter of keeping the whole plane heading in the right direction and then kicking it straight with the rudder at the last second so you're actually pointing straight(ish) down the runway.
There's a few other things to watch out for like wind gradient (wind speed drops as you get closer to the ground) and turbulence off buildings etc at the side of you.
Best crosswind landing as a passenger was coming into heathrow years ago, watching the runway coming towards me down the wing! The girl I was travelling with was so scared, she left bruises on my arm from where she was gripping so tight!

There's me thinking this was going to be a thread based around amazing action packed pencil drawings :-P Hats off to the pilots though!
