Hi All

So I thought I would share my story of losing my Bike v Car virginity on my SV this Tuesday.

I always expected that my first accident would be a result of making a poor decision, failing to properly observe or qualify road conditions. Not a uninsured, unlicensed Jeep Grand Cherokee failing to see me stationary turning right at a junction and plough into the back of me.

So, having been knocked into the oncoming traffic and fortunately not hit by anything else i find myself in a bit of shock and stuck under the SV unable to move.

He has stopped and gets out of the Jeep with a young lady. He helps me up... wheels my bike to the side of the road and then (leaving the woman with me) gets into the car and drives off.

After a short period the woman bursts into tears. I ask her why she is crying, apparently she has no idea who the guy is.. he was taking her to her wedding as a favour and clearly isn't coming back.

I see a police car in the road and they pull over... explaining the situation they ring the council and have the vehicle tracked using CCTV (i didn't realise this was possible)... although apparently the tapes overwrite every 20 min so if I hadn't stopped them quickly it wouldn't have happened.

After an hour he is arrested and turns up in a police car. Uninsured and without a drivers license. The police will throw the book at him and FORTUNATELY the car was insured by its owner who had let him drive... so I can claim off them.

SV was mostly cosmetic, scratches on the fairing, broken footpegs/indicators and the back. I'll hear back from the insurers soon enough.

He leaves in a warm police car... and I am left for another 90 minutes freezing my **** off by the side of the road waiting for a tow truck.

So... fortunately not serious... except now I have to listen to my mother telling me how I shouldn't be riding in the first place.... and I can't claim back for Pain and Suffering on that!!!!!! My misses on the other hand doesn't seem too bothered.. so either she is after my fortune or is exactly the right lady!

Haha, one of the funnier accident stories I've heard. More so for the fact that you're A Ok. Uninsured driver in a borrowed Jeep? The owner must be sick in the head! I also want to know if that girl got to the wedding on time?!

Glad your okay

It should be a quick one as the other persons insurance will pay out and probably blacklist the vehicles owner. Oh he will have also been collared for allowing a uninsured and unlicensed person use their vehicle

Surely the insurance won't pay out that easily as the bloke wasn't insured as he had no license etc?
P.S. Glad you're ok. That would be a s**t Christmas if you were injured.

The 'owner' may not own the Jeep either :-(

Glad you are ok mate, uninsured's are the worst!

Still at least they caught the guy, the jeep might be a 1 x 1m cube next year and the owner and driver could face prison time and fines depending how far the cops take it.

Good luck. Must say I'm impressed with the police actions and quick resolution. Glad you are ok.

Yeah the police deserve praise for sorting it so quickly-whether or not the courts will punish him appropriately is another thing.

You're always vulnerable waiting in the road to turn right-I live on a busy 60 road and always try and get a clear half mile behind me with no cars before turning into our drive. Easier said than done though sometimes.

As long as the vehicle is showing insurance on the MID, and there hasn't been a "genuine transfer of ownership", then as long as the driver can be identified, which he can be due to the police and the witness, then the insurer is compelled to deal under S152 of the Road Traffic act. If not, the claim would have only then been against the Motor Insurers Bureau.

Tesco's policies are no longer underwritten by UKI (Direct Line) - I think they are either Ageas or Liverpool Victoria, so I can't help directly, but at least you are onto them already -

Still, I have to say, being hit in the rear on a bike is about the most unusual way of having an accident with a car, it will make a nice change for the claim handler not to have to bicker with you on liability. I get so bored of policyholders collecting motorcycles at junctions, either pulling out and hitting a filtering biker or turning right into one with the same result.

HAHA, collecting, thats a very nice way of putting it!

I got rear ended last year as i was turning in to my work car park. Young girl "didnt see me" on my bright blue bike with giant indicators and bright brake lights.

Still it did convince me of one thing, Ford KA's can actually run over a pointy.

Great to get some industry perspective, much appreciated!!

I'm interested in the "more unusual" claims you have seen.
