View Full Version : Problems with S3

Anyone who saw my post on another thread about how much I didn't rate the S3...I was talking to a friend who reckons that it might be because I'm still running ICS (Android 4.0.4) rathern than JB (4.1.2 I think is the latest). (He thinks updating will solve my battery problems at least, and make it run smoother)

So, he shows me on his phone where it is, but I cannot find the 'check for updates' in the 'about phone' tab in settings.

A bit of googling later - turns out Orange and T-mobile have apparently not released the update yet (despite O2 and Vodafone releasing sometime in September).

Now, from what I've read, this is a pretty significant update to the phone and supposed to change quite a bit, so I'm a wee bit peeved that for my good money (and c'mon phone contracts are pretty extortionate) I'm not getting the update until most people will apparently be getting 4.2?

Absolutely ridiculous.

/rant over.

Im on tmobile and I'm on 4.1.2 and have been on JB 4.1.1 for ages prior. Updated OTA to 1.2 last night.

I though all carriers had updated to jelly bean..

Download Kies and install on to your computer then plug the phone in, make a backup of everything through there first before updating.

Actually I just Google it to, that's pretty pants... Without rubbing it in, JB completed the phone, it's worth the wait so hang on in there!

I installed Kies because I couldn't find an update button in settings!

I've updated the firmware and hopefully that will help my battery power a bit, but my mate with an S3 was getting an extra four hours over me. We even shut everything off, and both used just facebook for the same amount of time (my phone was on 6% his was on 4%) my phone died 2 minutes before his....I know that's not huge but to already have 2% more battery and die 2 minutes before doing the exact same tasks....

Frustrated isn't the word..

Got s3 on orange here.

Updates help a little with battery. I too am peeved at lack of jb and there appears to be no idea of when it's coming if at all.!

May just be a difficult battery, get a larger capacity one off eBay, there are plenty! I'm going to go for the really big double capacity one with the larger rear cover next...

Root it and install jellybean (or one of the many roms out there).

I've considered rooting, but I would have no idea what I was doing, no real need to and wouldn't want to break it!

Rooting is a fairly streamlined process, small risk of anything going wrong.

I bricked my desire rooting it. And would go for it again if I had a Propper poem Rom

Have you taken it back to the shop.
It's not "Fit for purpose".

Not talking just about phone batteries but batteries in general. As soon as they have some age they vary tremendously over power life.Everything has an affect, completely depleting the charge, overcharge, frequency of charge and the speed of discharge due to usage.
My bike battery is always on charge when the bike is garaged and I would hope for a 7-8 year life span from new. Other people can be lucky to get 3-4 years from their battery

why not swap battery with your mate and re run the test to verify if the battery is the limiting factor. One assumes both phones are running the same version of OS. If not you can at least see what you would expect to gain on your battery once your phone has been upgraded

I can't upgrade to latest OS - see another post by me somewhere...

Insurer it then run it over with your bike .

1. I don't have a bike at the minute :(:(:(
2. If I did do that, I'd probably get a puncture
3. Phone insurance is mostly a scam and they have such ridiculous terms normally including an excess of £50-100 too.

It's not that bad I can't live with it, it's just frustrated when you want to use features and have to constantly think about the battery.

Since doing the firmware upgrade, it does seem a bit better, although I haven't used it much recently so we shall see.

Have you tried the built in battery saver profiles .

I need to charge my S3 daily, and I'm on 4.1.1. I keep the charger plugged in by the bed and its just habit every night to plug it in and start each day with a fresh battery. I had an S2 before that and an older Windows Samsung smartphone before that. I've never been able to get two days from a phone battery since my first touch screen smartphone, I just accept it as a fact of life now.

I charge my phone every night and some days it will die by 3/4pm. It does seem to be holding charge much better since I updated the firmware though.

How much you use it .
That's all mine d.....
Oh recharge ...es ;)

I don't use it that much. Sometimes I have played games/listened to music and searched the web and had it die in about 3 hours. That's when I changed settings to have brightness all the way down etc.

General use is probably between 5-50 texts, maybe 20-30 minutes of music not on full volume and the occasional facebook/twitter check.

I use netschedule to switch to airplane mode overnight and back on at 7. This gives me about 2.5 days of use.

My S2 only lasts a day and has been like that from new , I turn the brightness down to acceptable levels and don`t have wi-fi/bluetooth etc turned on . What I did find is if you roam a lot or in place with a duff signal it can seek a fair bit and run the battery down . I found that O2 were a pain with updates so I tried Kies and it was just the purest pain in the ar53 on my laptop and would not recognise the phone over USB with debug on and off . In the end I downloaded Odin and the correct O2 update for my phone and did it manually .......... I actually hate ICS compared to what I was running before on the S2
