These have changed massively in recent years. What used to make a film an 18 can now be as low as a 12. Why is it that it's considered ok for kids to be exposed to extreme movie content now, but wasn't before? What has changed?

For xmas I got Sons of Anarchy season 1-4. In the little Certificate box it's labelled 15. In the caption it says "Contains strong bloody violence, torture, sexual violence, sex & drug use". So what makes an 18 these days? Perhaps "Contains real footage of babies being burnt on fires" or "This is a snuff movie" needs to be in the box to qualify.

as there is no one left to govern them due to Mary Whitehouse dying.

something i always found strange was 18 ratings for porno movies. you can get married and have kids at 16 but can't hire a porno.. wtf

It's American driven.

Give them guns but not boobies and they're happy all the way to church, try it the other way round and they'll condemn you to hell.

Money. The classification of films/movies/TV series restricts the audience. Therefore the lower age rating they can get, the better it is for all involved. I also think the judging categories have become more lenient, in regards to what age is suitable to see what kind of action.

I suspect that is true, but I know when I used to go to blockbuster with my mate we'd only rent 18 certs. It was the only way we could guarantee shocking violence.

Jobs got a point they always try to push the category because violence sells but they don't want to be classified higher so each time they go a little further until they have to reign it in.

But each time they push it its easier to say the next ones only fractionally worse.

I think the best test would be to get some children from the third world who have never experience violence or film. They would need to be on the threshold of each cert, so a small baby, a 12 year old and a 15 year old. Sit them in a room with the new movie and play it. If the colour drains from their face, they vomit, or they cry, then you move the movie up to the band above. Simple.

Obviously the emotionally disturbed children will then have to be disposed of. I reckon we should throw them into a pit of crocodiles and then pour acid on them. We can film it and call it "Raining on the Disturbed". PG13 obviously.

Or we could just make all certificates advisory.

looking is fine but touching results in being woken up at 3am with my balls in the wife's hand and in the other there is a hammer :-)

Maybe because the internet has changed the landscape when it comes to censorship and availability?
