Not sure why it's in the middle of the houses, but at current rate of erosion, Neptune may be lapping at its feet any time now.

Just checked back on this thread for the first time in a few days and now everyone is going to think I'm unoriginal, guess where I've been today:

Camera arrived moments before going to Belgium, messed about with a few shots there but not really trying. Popped out for a run today (in the car) and got a few that I quite like:

Loving the new camera, getting quicker on the controls now (only slightly different from the old one but some things have caught me out) Not used the touchscreen in anger yet, played with it when I first got it but not had a need as yet. Used the variangle LCD though for taking different angle shots a bit easier though and love that. I've set it to fast focus mode where it flicks back to regular mode, focusses and then brings back the live view.

Spent enough time on the bike this week, so here's one of mine. Been in the Isle of Man last week, so thought I would post 1 picture here & I'll do a little thread with a couple of other pics later.
I took over 1000 pictures last week, but have binned nearly 300 of them. I'm loving my 450D camera, think I made the right choice.

You are doing great things with it already Mister_C, ignore the fact that I've changed from a 450 as it isn't an upgrade, just an update. It makes some things more convenient but there is nothing I couldn't do with my 450D. I'd just gotten a little bored with it as I'd had it 4 years and wanted something new. (that and Richie made me jealous ;))

As pointed out on flickr, that is a stunning shot and re the binning 300 of them, it doesn't matter if you bin the other 999 if you had 1 as good as that!

This isn't Film where every 24 prints costs you £3.99 from Truprint :) (I'd hate to have to work like that, I'd cost myself so much for so little gain) a good 40% of any of my picture's "worth" is in the post processing to make it look above average. Sorry, rambling ;)

Anyway, perpetuating the lighthouses, I found another today:

I went in search of a cave called Queen's Parlour on the sandstone trail. I'd followed some vague instructions and found a cave at the point but it didn't seem like the one I'd seen. I came home though as I didn't want to blunder about looking for a cave I'd already been to. I read some new instructions and found a simpler way and realised it definitely wasn't the one I'd been in. I'm hoping to re-visit with a buddy for some light painting and stuff but it was pretty creepy alone (especially after having read the Crank Caverns page I'd posted in IB last week) had to explore every nook and cranny when I arrived and then I was reasonably sure the only way in and out was the one I'd seen so I was a little more at ease and set the camera up to take some pictures.

It is a tad tricky balancing painting the inside of the cave with light and judging the exposure time but these turned out OK:

They all easily fill to the tops by themeselves but i have to keep an eye out for cheeky robbing wasps as they chew through the outside of a full pitcher and pinch the drowning or half digested contents.

Could you tell me how acidic the solution is? Assuming you don't have any litmus paper to hand, could you put some on your tongue and compare it with say vinegar? You might if course think that was taking curiosity too far... (I won't hold it against you) :-)

The acidity is very similar to human stomach acid but is only that strong at the lower end of the pitcher and the upper is mostly water and seperated kind of like oil and water and as for tasting erm yuck ;) They do fine outdoors but live in unheated greenhouse over winter as they need to go dormant.

They all easily fill to the tops by themeselves but i have to keep an eye out for cheeky robbing wasps as they chew through the outside of a full pitcher and pinch the drowning or half digested contents.

I think the wasps chew through the pitchers to get out rather than in.

If anyone else fancies growing them there are a few simple rules:

1) Water them with rainwater, not tap water
2) The best compost is peat & (lime free) sharp sand
3) Leave them standing in an inch of water through the summer
4) Keep them moist in the winter but not saturated
5) Cool, but not freezing in the winter
6) No tap water, no fertilizer

Sarracenia are bog plants and are adapted to live in nutrient poor, acidic soils. The lime in tap water reduces that acidity and eventually kills them. Apart from that caveat they're pretty easy to grow.

Nope i have seen the stripey buggers making a door on the outside of the pitcher to get at the gooey insect soup inside grrr. Will get photo proof when they start the attack this year. I grew a few indoors (before i started outdoor) for a good few years on a window sill with good old Durham tap water with no ill effects before i realised i shouldn't use tap water doh, so our water around here must be lime free :)

Hehe, this one was taken for a weekly challenge I participate in, the topic for the week was "motion" I'd had the idea for this and a possible zoom burst but never got around to the latter.

and I'm only lesser spotted relaxing as I have good hiding places to relax, not that I'm a busy person :D

Doesn't need a keeper but they are always well wrapped to avoid anything like that, this one had cardboard around to form a tube and keep the magnetic bit clear then bubblewrap a plenty. couldn't tell it was magnetic from the outside.

What's the names and numbers for lph? non sport fan question.

If a player scores a 100 or more batting or takes 5 wickets or more in an innings (or ten in a match on the board to the right) then they have their name added to the Lord's Honours Board. Every pro I've ever met has wanted to get their name up there and it's a really big thing for them.
