Sorry for the post spam, I should've stuck them into sets but I didn't upload them from lightroom like that so it might confuse it if I move them now.
My brother had just arrived in the county from Glasgow and I already hijacked him with an idea for a mini adventure "Lets go wandering off into a wood in darkness to find a place I've never been before" :smt104
Thankfully he is as weird as me and even his fiancée tagged along and helped me out amazingly by being effectively a voice activated shutter trigger. [-o< We got in there, checked the size of the place (massive!!) found out the other doorways were blocked off which meant we only had to listen out for anyone at the single door we'd come in through and it was a fully open warehouse so we could see from wherever we were in the space. Puddles on the floor meant we got some cool reflections and tried to feature some of the building in the other shots. I want to get some daytime shots there to show the place and its surroundings off but it is very cool and a great lightpainting space. There are weirder ways to spend your Sunday night but not many.
I was REALLY glad I'd got my sunbeam torch (2000 lumens(ish) of goodness, lit up the woods enough to make it not creepy) :smt115
PS Bill, I love your lights shots, they always look just abstract enough to make you think about what you are looking at but well composed enough to work it out, I really like them!

Hah sorry Richie, I wish I could say it was skill but basically get in a vaguely interesting location, turn the shutter on and dance around with something lit up in front of the camera and voila, instant cool picture.
I felt like a director when I had two people with me though I was telling my brother what to highlight with his torch and how to sweep it etc heh, thankfully he took it all with good grace :)

Here are mine from last night - Chris8886 and I went to the Nativity and Carol Service at the church in the village I grew up in. They have a real donkey for the Nativity, he's owned by one of the villagers. My older nephew is in the choir, my younger one, who is very cheeky, told the choir he'd put money in the collection tin so Lee the vicar could go out and get drunk with the money! This year the donkey behaved, last year he tipped Mary off halfway to Bethlehem and the year before did a massive cr@p right next to the vicar in the aisle.

And from me three. I must have been very good this year as a shiny new 700d with 18-135 was sitting under the tree for me. Was way too busy feeding my face and drinking to play with it too much so the mutt was the only thing sitting still long enough for me to practice on. She was half asleep and not best pleased but hey ho.
Will get out and play tomorrow hopefully. Don't have anything like as interesting as Beamish close by (was YEARS ago when I went but a fascinating place) but we'll see.
Merry Christmas all.

Merry Christmas to all, that sounds cool trev! Can't wait to see what you shoot with it :-)
Most of my presents followed a similar theme:
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/12/26/ydedu7a8.jpg
I'd been talking to anyone who'd listen about me finding I actually liked whisky and the exploration of the flavours.
It was a very Merry Christmas here as we follow German tradition and open gifts on Christmas Eve and once step son had arrived safely I cracked open the kraken. Half pint of black currant cordial and the same of Kraken black rum :-)

Hope everyone had a lovely Christmas!
The days over here.
Everyone is back at home, too full from eating too many Christmas dinners at too many houses.
The Mrs. is on facebook with her friends sharing Christmas pics.
A cold night it is and time for a little Christmas cheer.
Ice cold Coke and some ice cold (from the freezer) 'homemade apple brandy' of the highest quality.
Wow just a few sips and suddenly your face feels all warm. :D
Outsiders (and the government) would call this 'moonshine' but that's a term we use to descibe cheaply made corn whiskey.
This is the good stuff!!! A Christmas gift from an old friend.
Cheers!

Just a few alternative photo observations on Christmas Day. Living next to the beach, it seemed fitting to take the camera out. The Oystercatchers are a regular feature of Mumbles Bay - free, unlike their less fortunate cousins on plates around lunch-time! They wait at the waters edge - as I approached I knew they would instantaneously take flight. The pre-focussing was a bit of luck! The new bench had two plaques; a mum and dad died within 6 months of each other this year. The flowers were fresh that day - some Christmases must be difficult. I part coloured the flowers to contrast past and present. Finally the dog walkers. As they moved within earshot, I realised they had rescue dogs. The slowest was a Greyhound and they gave him all the time he needed. I'm sure they all enjoyed their Xmas lunch later.

I retired from professional photography a couple of years ago. I take shots just for me these days, rather than someone else. Probably the dog picture would have been rejected for sale because it was a bit fuzzy! Personally I enjoy that kind of imagery. It's nice to be a free spirit again!

Good efforts as always Richie! Wish I had your drive to get out as often as you do.
Got let out of work early so decided to try and get a picture for the day, the light was nice but getting to a subject that was in the right place wasn't as easy as it should be.
Settled for this but I'm quite pleased with it:

Not sure what we're gonna do next year as this thread draws to a close but it has been an excellent idea and has gotten many of us out more often than we would have and has also inspired more people to pick up a camera :-)

This.
It has made me stop dithering and just get another SLR, even if it is at the end of the year. Was hoping for a good deal around Chrimbo but in the end saved £100 on the start of year price and Jessops had a bundle deal that threw in case, UV filter, cleaning cloth and spare battery so I'm happy.
May well revisit some places I've been this year to see how a better sensor and lens copes but would love it if the inspiration of a thread like this was to continue. Not sure if we need to change the ideal though - pic a day is great and complements the monthly competition nicely.

As anyone who's tried my cakes at a meet knows I usually do simple lemon drizzle, Victoria, chocolate fudge sort of stuff but as the nephew has 4 friends coming over to mine for a pizza party I thought I ought to try something different. I've never colored and moulded icing like that before so had no idea what I was doing as it doesn't come with any instructions and I just downloaded a pic of T&J from the internet as a guide. Last year I did him a Monster Jam cake but that was easy. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/12/28/buqe9ype.jpg

Light was nice today so wandered off into the park to find some trees and play with the landscape settings on my new toy. Shame Jackie gets violent with other dogs preventing us going here, especially as this is two minutes walk from my house.
Sun was a bit low but the lack of clouds was great for me to practice with.

Trev! nice going, when I got a DSLR from owning the canon bridge camera it took me a surprising amount of time to get a decent picture out and I'm still not sure why but I kept getting stuff wrong. REALLY nice shots :)
We (my wife and I) tried out her Christmas present today, I got her a joint membership to the National Trust so we decided to check out our nearest attraction Errdig.

Can't wait to see the gardens change through the year as we will be going back there quite a few times I think, 20-30 mins away but still the closest :)
Many more pictures to come in 2014 from NT sites methinks.
Nice Shots Sir Trev & Bret, It was a bloody cold day that I can tell you... :0/
Luckly I wore my bike thermals but my son was frozen so came home early. Still a good day out :)

Yeah I bet it was cold, we only spent just over an hour at Errdig (perks of the membership, if I'd paid full entry price I'd be still there and wanting a room for the night!)
Might get a bonus shot tonight as the skies are clear and I've been dying to get a star trail shot.
Looking forward to seeing what is created :)

Richie - take your mind out of the gutter!
Was a bit frosty again here today so more paying was required. However, I now need to find a better online site to store things, as Photobucket takes forever to load the bigger pictue files I now have. I also need to work out how to add a copyright logo...

I've not had time to go near my PC for a few days so here we have yesterday morning, taking my younger nephew out for a bit of off-roading on the new motorbike, then last night I hosted the elder nephew's birthday party at my house. We played charades, made rude shapes out of balloons and played the marshmallows on string game and the lads loved the cake. Then today a muddy 5 mile walk round Thorndon Country Park near Brentwood. Taken mostly on my little Canon G15.

I've absolutely loved the shots this year guys. Its also been great seeing how peoples eye has developed over the year and trying new techniques and going out for shots that you've always wanted to try. Who can forget Brettus' epic radio dish thread? Sir Trev's beautiful and simple landscapes at the end with, it seems, very little post production are amazing and testament the effort, practice and enjoyment throughout the year. Richie, the shots you have taken recently playing around with HDR and post-production techniques have been almost surreal in how "real" the look. Was it York castle about a month ago, we saw a series of about 6 different post productions of the same photograph all showing a completely different mood.
These are just the ones I've been reminded of most recently, there have been loads of other brilliant photos and I am frequently been in awe of this thread. Looking forward to "Two photos a day 2014", and the grand finale to this thread.

Right as the author of this thread I was struggling to think of a way to sign it off. I've not been well the last couple of days and the light has been crap to do anything outside.
So a few things to say.
YAY WE DONE IT
Thanks to Brettus for sowing the seed in my mind to start this thread
Thanks to everyone who contributed, didn't matter what or how good it was just the contribution was enough, I've only had to rescue it a few times.
For me it has been a welcome distraction in an annus horriblus, just making sure something ha been posted has helped me personally.
As my Mum & Dad were both professional photographers I do have a good idea of what constitutes a good photo, there's been some absolute stunners.
So all that remains I think is my final photo of 2013

Actually got out with the camera, but hardly anything to take pictures of...
Ah yes, the photographer's equivalent of the writer's blank page. When I taught photography in schools a few years back, I would often send them out with a brief to enable subjects to be found almost everywhere. Rather than, 'there was nothing much of interest out today', 'the interest is in your eye', I would tell them. There are a million photographs all around us at all times - finding them is the challenge -
mister c's lovely shot of water movement around the rocks ( camera braced on wall or maybe just a slowish hand held shutter speed perhaps?) is a case in point. 'Movement' as a theme will often get students' shutters clicking in all sorts of creative ways ( moving pedestrians all blurry against a sharp background can be soooo rewarding
Low light, still-life, reflections, faces, texture, selective focus (eg: line of railings at wide aperture) low viewpoint etc are just some examples of 'enthusiasm starters'
The picture you are hoping for may not be there for everyone to see - but your photographic intuition can guide you to finding a great shot when others see an ordinary one. Imagine you have one of the world's greatest photographers along side you - he will be looking at exactly the same scene as you - it's what is in your mind that differs. Having a camera that focuses well is useful - having a mind that focuses better is probably more useful.
In the 60's my father was commissioned to photograph a London bus. He stood in Piccadilly Circus and all he could see were buses against a familiar background - he needed something different. Then suddenly as he turned away he saw a highly reflective glass building. He positioned the tripod and waited - the resulting image of a Routemaster reflected in modern architecture accompanied by traditional Eros was used on hoardings across the Capital.
Next time you stand in front of a lovely scene, just reflect on the number of ways, viewpoints etc in which it can be depicted - it can be quite a few!
Sometimes the photograph is within rather than without. Close-ups indoors can be worthy subjects - recently these cotton wool buds interested me by their arrangement and Photoshop gave me a bit of fun with which to manipulate the raw image:

I've really enjoyed this thread too. A lot of the pics I've posted haven't been technically brilliant, and no post production, often taken on my phone or my G15 but the fun was just trying to remember to take a pic each day. It shows what a variety of stuff we get up to. Mine has included everything from Maasai Warriors and monks to Andrew Strauss having wax squirted in his ears to atmospheric sunsets and fun times with my best mate Chris8886. I'm off to on another biking trip shortly do should be some good photos from that to come.
