That loco looks rather American to me Mister C! Always seems a bit odd to see them on UK rails, even when some of them were made over here.
Although it was very gloomy today I got a few silouettes of some of our iconic sky dwellers. Reintroduced to the Chilterns over ten years ago the Red Kite has done very well here and you can see many of them gliding about the skies above Wycombe. I've seen them a few times as far south as Bracknell on the way to work and to the east in Uxbridge too. So serene as they find lift with ease they hardly ever flap their wings - very graceful and relaxing to watch.

Down in Devon on work so decided to make the most of it and try and get some shots. Couldn't really make use of my zoom as I ended up having to do night shots so I did a panorama which became my Project 52 image for the week. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/brettnet/8537193587/in/photostream)
and then this pub caught my eye, the contrast of the sign somehow seemed worthwhile. I'm not sure my picture did justice to what I saw but I'm pleased enough with it to upload to flickr.

Richie, love that shot, you really excel at the simplicity of composition, I can rarely see such shots, mine have too much going on in them sometimes. I'm trying to learn though so keep em coming! The vignette works well too.
Do you actually use photoshop to process your images BTW?

in answer to your question "yes" I shoot in RAW and and then play with the sliders, then the vignette was a bonus ;)

Right I've just ordered these filters (58mm ND2 ND4 ND8 Neutral Density Filters), quick question
can I take a photo of the SUN ???
if all of them are used ???
watch this SPACE :) god I need a bigger lens :(
Brettus
09-03-13, 09:47 AM
Cool re the filters, you can take a shot of the sun without them it just has to be fast, but even with filters to risk your camera less the sun isn't that interesting ;)
What you CAN do with ND filters is VERY interesting though (at least to me :geek:) having the set means you can vary your effect too.
Re the photoshop question I was asking as I tried photoshop (in truth it is mainly camera raw that does the magic) to start with and thought it was so much more powerful than just in camera stuff. But then I discovered lightroom, it was all the photo balancing power of photoshop without the unnecessary complexity and excess power of photoshop.
There is a demo available: https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/index.cfm?product=photoshop_lightroom
I hasten to add though I'm not saying this in a "you don't wanna do it like that, I know a much better way" it is just sharing experience and possibilities, you might work better in photoshop and find lightroom limiting or something or just not suited to your workflow but it is worth a try.
Reasons I like it:
It has (at least from memory) more photo appropriate sliders
It catalogs my pictures
It lets me rate my pictures (see ramble note below)
It integrates with flickr to upload pictures with titles, comments, geotags...
It watermarks my pictures (more ramble note)
It lets me create virtual copies of pictures so you can edit up in different ways (colour/mono etc)
It has graduated and brush "filters" so you can apply targeted post processing
It integrates with other programs for things it doesn't specialise in (photoshop for panoramic, photomatix etc for HDR)
Ramble notes:
Rating my pictures seemed like such a vain thing when I first heard about it, but now I've made it part of my workflow and it means I can find any half decent ones pretty quickly. It also means when I want to view my library I can choose my filter that shows me my wheat and ignores the chaff. I still like having the chaff there as it reminds me how many shots it takes to get to whatever result I got and also they can be learned from.
Watermarking my pictures also seemed like an excessive thing to do, overly proud of what I'd made but it wasn't until someone stole one of my images that I realised the benefit of it. It gives me some sense of security, I don't mind my images being used elsewhere but I'd like credit or at least people to know it was someone else. Don't get me wrong, I don't pretend that because I've got a watermark on there that it is mine, (my precious!) they can be photoshopped out, even simply cropped out, but I know I've done my part then. I see it a bit like locking your bike up, putting the steering lock on is a token effort towards securing your bike. You can take it to the nth degree but if someone wants to steal there isn't a whole lot you can do about it. Same goes with images. I'm not trying to change other people, just satisfy my own conscience.
I moved from paintshop pro to Photoshop elements 10 recently. That catalogs too. I don't tend to use the artistic stuff so much, but it is brilliant at removing objects and adjusting levels. Also good at selecting elements to treat them separately such as bluring background.
I've got a copy of lightroom but can't get into it. :( must try harder....
anyhow here's mine for today, another crap weather day but liked the raindrops on the window.

messing with Lightroom... OMG.... :)
http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/449/durhamcathedralcool1.jpg
just a quuick question... how do you save your creation in lightroom???
It's already saved. Just go back to your library and you'll see it kinda already overwrites the original.
Or it does on Mac anyway, if your on PC it might be different

Nope it overwrites on PC too but fear not Richie, you can go back and undo ANY step at almost any point. You can Also say, well I liked the highly stylised version at this point, but I also liked it natural but enhanced at this one and create a virtual copy at that point so you can have it processed both ways.
Edit: might be more helpful if I actually point out how. you go to the develop tab for your selected image then down the left hand side you have history. you can take it right back to import or any step in between. you can also create snapshots which serve as "bookmarks" in your history. so if you tweak a photo up and then think, I wonder what this would look like if I used ALL the filters on it... you can skip back quickly when you are done.
Bonus point: the creating virtual copy takes up virtually no disk space as it doesn't copy the image, merely store the settings to be overlaid ON that image.
whilst on the subject (sorry to pollute the thread but it could be useful to others) if/when you DO start importing everything into lightroom, do it as "copy to DNG" short for Digital Negative. it is an adobe standard, RAW isn't a standard, raw is just as it suggests, raw data which needs a particular codec or language to interpret. DNG is more easily understood and also has a benefit of being able to store the settings for the images inside the files or as sidecar files. with raw you don't have a choice, it cannot embed the data so if you moved your library elsewhere you'd have to get it to find the files for changes. DNG seems to make most sense to me but I'm willing to hear otherwise of course.

Just a quick snap on my phone today. The family of an MCC Member scattered his ashes in the memorial garden yesterday and unveiled a bench in his memory. I just liked the way the light was making the little bunch of flowers stand out this morning.

Mines a bit boring today. Went out to try & get used to light & focus with my Lumix on Manual as I'm having a few problems. This was probably the nicest of the bunch.

Just giving my son a quick lesson on the basics of how a camera works, so I got my dads old camera out to demonstrate.
Then found the bulb setting and thought.... Hang on a second I can see a photo happening here :)
Two tripods and a load of faffing about this is my finished result ;) I'm very happy with it.

I've still got issues uploading to picasa, might be something to do with my mobs software
the photo before the crop and vignette :)

had to have the camera case open and the aperture set to f2 to get the lens wide open, then focus the lens at the other camera taking the photo. Then had to put myself at the correct distance away from the back of the old camera so I could see the other camera in focus if that makes any sense...
