View Full Version : Photo a day 2013

Ok, this may or may not work, but lets give it a shot (see what I did there :D)
Inspired by Brettus's attempt to do a photo a day himself, perhaps as a group we can achieve this?
Simple rules, any theme, any kind of photographic equipment, so phone or proper camera.
Photo's must be appropriate to the U rating
Only one photo per day and should be taken on the day in question. Unless you think that multiple photo's per day is ok? But there must be at least one per day for each day of the year.
So here's the first one, taken on my phone

I'm game for this, I'm actively trying to take more pictures again this year so I'm game for contributing, I think it'd have to allow multiple images per day either that or have a rota kind of thing as it'd be a shame if someone goes out to get a cracking image but is beaten to it by someone like me posting a picture of their lunch ;)
The org can accomplish anything it sets it's (hive)mind to :D

SO.... Im guessing this has failed?
Unless someone somewhere took a picture yesterday they want to upload belatedly.

ROFL! Found one, its a bit odd but I'll add it.

Took this yesterday, I spilt some break fluid on my head don't ask) on new years day and I've since had a really sore head. Late on on the 1st the skin on my scalp peeled off in large sections, this was a picture taken yesterday to see if any more skin was peeling off as once again my scalp felt quite sore and itchy.

Good catch owenski, didn't even realise the date :(
I've got one for today, a prior subject but I was running out of time and it was dark on the way home ;)

Turned out alright for an iPhone shot. tweaked the sky up a little in iPhoto to reflect the level at the time.

No that's cool
Don't mind multiple shots per day, so long as we get one a day.

quick idea to allow a variation in who posts a photo each day.
Maybe a rule could be that if you post one day you can't post the next day to allow another poster to get a chance to put a photo up then you can post new photo up the day after and so on.

Maybe, unless nobody posts up a photo, the aim is 365
Perhaps a Mod can sticky this thread?

Cracking Pic richie! I can spot the chain tesselated underneath but the spindle looking bit is confusing me. Very nice shot.
you're right about the chain, but the spindle is a sawn off old L37a rifle barrel that I now use as a drift for bearings ;)

OK I can safely say I'd never have guessed it was a sawn off gun barrel! nice.
You have been photographically busy recently, your flickr stream was eyecatching ;) (also a nice shot BTW)

All trains cancelled from Chelmsford so had to drive 15 miles to Shenfield station where this was waiting. I think that's one of Greater Anglia's newer trains.
Yes, it was taken yesterday. We've got no snow at all at the moment. The joys of being at sea level and having one of the biggest oil refineries and petroleum processing sites in the UK mean we rarely get snow.

Must remember to take the camera with me when I go to the dentist in the morning. Not to take a pic of my dentist (although she's a very nice lady) but perhaps some of the old bits of HW town centre. Don't normally get to see daylight on a weekday at this time of year which makes picture taking more challenging.

Hah, OK I admit it, i fell asleep, it was posted at 11:15PM and was taken at 2:56PM. I just knocked off work early as I was sick and had been travelling. Slept till late evening and then started poring over the photos I'd come back with (and the Buzz "snowtography"* one :))
*Hol coined the term and I think it fully encompasses the UK's (and other places where it doesn't snow much I guess) obsession with capturing the snow as it just looks so cool (no pun intended)

Not what you want to find when it's snowing and your car is at the bottom of the hill along with the rest of the neighbour's cars. Could be worse - next door's Audi had two tyres slashed like this and the car next to it all four. Some scrote with a knife went along the whole line and did at least ten cars.

Keith, how did you take that? it's awesome! very nice shot.
I started by bunging one polarising filter in the freezer. Then I assembled a stack of stuff in my freezing cold garage. In this order:
Camera (top)
Bellows
50mm lens
Polariser
Sheet of perspex
Piece of white plastic bag (diffuser)
Flashgun (bottom)
I put the cold polariser out to collect some snow, then I placed it on the sheet of perspex and started shooting. The polarisers blocked most of the direct light, which made the snowflakes stand out nicely. From 40 frames I got one good one and a couple of acceptable ones.
The original image came out rather warm (orange/brown) so I changed the colour balance to better suit the subject in Photoshop.
Here are some tips if you want to give it a try:
1) Use the camera and flash in manual. Automatic flash results in the snowflakes being overexposed.
2) When you assemble the setup, pre-set the focus and flash power using a couple of crystals of sea salt
3) When you put the polariser in the freezer, put it inside a freezer bag. Otherwise it is instantly covered in condensation when you take it out in a nice warm kitchen
4) Even in a freezing cold garage you don't get long before the snowflakes start to melt. So shoot quickly.
5) By the time you're finished your gear will be close to freezing. Wrap it in a plastic bag before bringing it indoors and let it warm up before unwrapping it.
Keith.
