Landmarks
Landmarks have an instant connection with a place, but they're not always easy to snap. Composition and luck with the light can make all the difference.
Don't limit yourself to nationally known icons either - if you have something interesting local to you then let's see it. Just remember to tell us where it is! Ancient, industrial, modern, natural, the choice is yours.
A few from me to get you thinking.

Beside the Temple Church in London (as featured in The Davinci Code) is the Knights Templar monument - quite a focal point in an area dominated by lawyer's offices.

The Palm House at Kew Gardens.

If you want to go for an instantly recognisable "biggie", such as Nelson's Column here, go for it!

Banbury Cross, as in:
Ride a c0ck-horse to Banbury Cross,
To see a fine lady upon a white horse;
With rings on her fingers and bells on her toes,
She shall have music wherever she goes.[ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ride_a_****_horse_to_Banbury_Cross#cite_note-Opie1997-2)
Good Luck!

This may not be the most fantastic photo, it was taken on maximum zoom on a little Sony Cybershot a few years ago. Nor is it the most crystal clear.
It looks like a bunch of houses and a hillside, on a hazy day.
I took this from the top floor of Debenhams in Nicosia, Cyprus. Its the viewing point over the Green Line, or the forbidden/buffer zone, which divides the city.
That on the hillside is the Turkish flag and also the flag for the Internationally unrecognised Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus(occupied territory) Burnt into the hillside as a (possible) two finger salute to the Greeks. A reminder they can't cross the border, without a lot of faff*, and a reminder of a terrible time in the history of the island, which is still lingering on today. You can see it from rather a distance as its rather huge.

*A bizarre, and most akward of experiences. Maybe one day people will be free to roam around the Island without UN intervention, and a great big fence running through the middle of a beautiful place, dividing its people.

Lakshmi Mittal's helter skelter is probably an ex-landmark by now. But hopefully it still counts.

Used channel mixer to strip the background to B&W. Nothing else. Especially not the blackboard...
Mine for January, from our visit to the Colosseum, Rome last August. Amazing place.

The Vote off Starts.... :)
Feel free to start the vote off on the 26/01/13 ;)
Since Composition and luck with the light can make all the difference in this months theme it's a close call between keith_d and Brettus.
Brettus get my vote by a nose.

Mister_C gets my vote, difficult choice but its a different shot from the rest. The close up showing the texture makes it stand out for me. A lot of interesting landmarks showing up, good topic and good entries!

Mister C - love the way the light highlights the texture of the material.
Closely followed by the lovely colour in Keith's, and Haggis' 'cos I'm a sucker for ancient monuments.

Mister C. gets my vote for a different take on things. Though I don't like placement of the people in the background, he should have either waited for them to wander off or perhaps placed them a little further from the sculpture. (Yeah, everyone's a critic :D )
