Why are old PS3 worth so much?

I recently bought a new PS3. I have an old original 40gb 'fat' one in the cupboard, so I pinched the controller so I have 2 for my new one.
Since that just leaves an old PS3 box I was going to bin it, but I checked ebay - they are regularily fetching close to £100 :confused:
What am I missing, why are they so desireable?

original gen boxes have ability to play ps2 games
they have SD/CF card slots
other than that they are noisy compared to the new ones

If you think thats bad, in Japan they've only recently stopped making/selling the PS2!!!

I've got one of the old 60gb ones, it had the ylod problem after about 4 years, the 40gb ones didn't have roll back (play ps2 games) if I remember correctly.

It's in bits now but hdd and blueray drive works fine, would it be worth me selling it as spares?

I have the original PS3, the one that plays PS2 games and has the cooling fans from a jumbo jet!

I think with an extra controller and Resistance Fall of Man I payed over £500 for it on release day!!

Can you connect PS3 'Move' to the Old FAT ones?

I've got a PS2, with loads of games, but I know they will only play on old FAT PS3's

But youngest daughter wants that 'Book of spells' game and its only available for PS3's and no other game console.

If it does, anyone got a FAT one that works with old PS2 games for sale

The PS connect system will play on all kit.

I have a 40gb model. Its very slow compared to the newer versions. My old 40gb model will also play PSOne games :)
