If its forecast to **** it down all weekend I'm not gunna bother.
I ride in all weathers so it isn't that, more the fact of camping in a muddy sloppy field for the weekend. Not a fan.

Aw man, I hope the weather holds out

The weather will be what the weather will be. According to the forecast it should be raining here right now (about 20 miles from AR epi-centre) but it's bone dry and 20 degrees.

It's been a showery weekend but as we've had a couple of dry weeks nothing stayed wet for long. The campsite is very unlikely to be a Glastonburyesque quagmire.

So expect showers. If it's dryer than expected than happy days. If it's wetter than expected then you were kitted up for showers so no drama. If it's absolutely chucking it down then chances are you'd not be leaving home anyway and if you got as far as here we'll still ride but spend longer sat in the warm dry pub in the evening than sat around the field either way there will still be beer drunk and completely random conversations to be had.

Personally I plan to wear leathers and pack an all in one waterproof. Did that for 2000 miles around France this time last year when it was biblical rain for most of the time and was absolutely fine.

Unless it snows heavily, there will still be a ride-out and the camping field will be fine.

Wideboy

They said It was going to rain on sat but I was on a farm just north of langrish and the weather was splendid.

They never get it right anyway

Biblical rain all through AR11, Surrey to Yorkshire Dales. Rained all weekend, had a great time and I bloody hate riding and camping in the rain. Yorkshire rain is reet proper rain and that was a reet proper storm.

It won't rain heavy here, this is the South you know. what what what.

If anyone is around on the Saturday and not doing the ride, or fancies Sunday lunch with some excellent local beers I can recommend The Thomas Lord pub a few miles away in East Meon. It's certainly more expensive than the site pub but the food is very good and it has a gorgeous garden.

Wideboy
17-06-13, 08:52 PM
over priced yuppy pub that, there's far better pubs in the area.

anyway as it's been said, although its not compulsory it would be nice if we supported the meon hut considering they're putting us up for free

Littlepeahead
17-06-13, 08:58 PM
That must be why The Thomas Lord has won so many awards. I assume people will eat at the base camp a couple of times but nice to have other options, and this one is good. Best burger I've had in ages and the parmesan and truffle fries were a sublime treat.

17-06-13, 09:06 PM
i rest my case

James martin also has a restaurant in Winchester if anyone else is feeling like wasting some money.

I'm not trying to be funny but people from the meon hut may be looking at this site and to see people recommending other pubs in the area is a bit of an insult, they're putting us up for free with the intention of making money off us via pub service and i think its only fair they do. I appreciate that is it not compulsory

Spank86
17-06-13, 09:07 PM
TBH you'll be in the. Middle of the South Downs national park, there's at least one pub in or just outside every village and the standard of food is pretty good in all of them.

I particularly recommend the flowerpots up the road in cheriton if Sir Dave of Preston (or anyone else) wishes to sample some locally brewed ale (locally as in just across the yard from the main pub)

Raymond blanc also has a restaurant in Winchester and I can personally guarantee that the food there will meet all your overpricing needs whilst remaining no more delicious than a normal pub meal albeit in smaller portions artfully presented.

That must be why The Thomas Lord has won so many awards.

Probably. Their AA double rosette puts them somewhere in the top 40% of all the eateries in their restaurant guide.

Which I'm guessing was its purpose?

rictus01
18-06-13, 08:38 AM
only because I'm subscribed to the thread, so font size wasn't a factor, personally I think it's rude to shout and uncalled for myself, or was it a concession to us older folk who wear glasses ?

besides I was told in no uncertain terms the Lunch stop location was a secret, so although I can order food it would be pointless if I don't know where it'll be served.

Wideboy
18-06-13, 08:52 AM
At a table.

I'm guessing the secret petrol station is also a problem as it might not be facing the correct way?

rictus01
18-06-13, 09:02 AM
without a location, floor/table or thrown against a wall are equally pointless.

Not sure what you normally do, but I've never per-ordered petrol and whatever way the station faces I've the ability to turn my bike around, you should try it, it's so much more convenient than waiting for roundabouts

I've just given a location. A table on a relatively level surface I would imagine. On the wall just seems silly to me

There will also be chairs, toilets, glasses, plates, cutlery, some grass outside and maybe a tree.

I've voiced no concern over the direction on the fuel station. Personally I don't need turn around as if the if pumps on the right or the left, I'm ambidextrous.

How about we start a brand new thread for people to be pedantic about everything, complain about the price of beer, the weather, other venues and events to attend rather than the AR and keep this one for attendees to plan to have fun instead.

rictus01

Rictus, you've already said you are not doing the ride, unlikely to turn up, know every inch of the area and will be making your own plans anyway so why the need to be so engaged and upset about a thread that holds very little interest for you?

my plans have been as much dictated by the help and information I've recieved from here Mark as other concerns, I've been put off coming the friday night, told I can't attend the lunch stop, intimated I should buy all my drink in the pub, not exactlly conducive to my plans, I'll (as anyone else can) will eat what and where I want, interesting the most obvious food option isn't even offered (Sunday morning breakfast) :smt102.

Yes of course I know most of the roads, but then I ride that part of the country regularly and have done for year, more pertinent would be I've ridden on many AR's before and can't see it being enjoyable to myself, up to me how I choose to spend the weekend, not you to dictade.

As to the thread holding little interest to me (according to yourself), it's a weekend where I get to see friends, and I'll take as much interest a I want and post on the forum when I choose thanks.

You do actually understand this AR thing is supposted to be for the members and not just a private little thing to score points or something ?

Paul the 6th
18-06-13, 10:06 AM
Once a year many of us get together, see old family and friends, have a big meal, celebrate the festive period, exchange gifts, eat & be merry... Often times people whine about the dining arrangements or fall out, maybe complain about other people that are attending etc.

And then there's Christmas which is very similar to AR.

After years of annual sarcastic comments from myself, trying to undermine arguing and moaning (from both sides) in an attempt to remind you all it's supposed to be a fun weekend, I've realised AR just wouldn't be AR without a few people snapping at each other over trivial waffle.

Still stands though that I hope everyone has a good time :) just gutted a I can't be there

Cheers gav & I know man tell me about it, just really really bad timing - got to be in Nottingham for 3pm on the Sunday, which means driving 4.5 hours from AR to York (past nottingham) pick up works van, then 2 hours from York to Nottingham, then got a 5 hour rig for an event = would have to leave AR at 6-7am, which means I'd not be able to do my usual routine of getting pist as feck and making an asswhole out of myself on the saturday night - and that's what I was really coming for (wasn't too fussed about the ride out). So it'll be a long way to come to stand around worrying about getting off early doors sunday, and then if there are any accidents on the m25/m1 etc. then the job will be absolutely fecked.

Just can't risk it :( however have talked with Keating about sorting a rideout down your way in July so will be down for a weekend. Miss ya buddy!

I thought we'd cleared up that if not drinking inside the pub you can bring as much food and drink as you wish but that it would be nice if some money was passed to the pub since they have allowed us the use of the field for free.

I had a bit of a scare yesterday. Passing the bike I had a look over the tyre as I often do and spotted a little metallic object stuck in the tyre. Had a bit of a prod and couldn't get it out so started to panic that I had a little nail in the tyre (having just moved flats this month, paying double rent and having two deposits outstanding I'm in no position to replace it before the AR!).

When I got back from doing what I was doing I thought bugger it, I'm not happy riding with a nail in the tyre regardless so I prodded a little harder and it came out. Turned out to be a tiny shard of something vaguely metallic (although it felt more like glass) about the size of a blob of solder. Considering how tiny it was it left quite a cut though not through the normal depth of tread so still safe.

Not a problem Rictus.

I was reminded earlier that the reason we decided on the Saturday breakfast not Sunday was that everyone will be up at the same time Saturday but with a skinfull in some of us sat night and people leaving at different times Sunday it was considered that a fixed breakfast time wouldn't have worked as well.

This AR has been planned as a team and along with all the pro's there's the unfortunate con that whilst we've all been involved with everything we haven't necessarily all (or me anyway) remembered every detail correctly. Luckily between us we can fill in the blanks about things we set in place months ago.

Well for me, c20 miles from AR epi-centre today was forecast to be cloudy and showers. It's bloody roasting 32 degrees and clear blue sky. The Guinea pigs are hiding in the shade and the dragon flies are out in full force over the pond. Clearly God* does not listen to the BBC these days.

Yeah, my backside is still mildly damp from going out to move my bike at lunchtime.
