View Full Version : Givi Monolock top box on a pointy - Too lightweight?
I've recently got myself a second hand SW Motech Alu rack for my pointy SV and it's come with a monolock mounting plate. I'm wondering if anyone has used a monolock top box on their SV specifically (or other larger bike/non scooter) and if so how did you find it? I've not bought myself a top box yet so just wanting to make sure I buy the right one.
All the stuff I've read online says the monolock is for 'lightweight use' and possibly more suited to scooters etc. I notice the load rating is 3kg as opposed to the monokey being 10kg but to be honest I can't see me filling it with anything seriously heavy. Main use will be occasional trips with the wife as pillion and it'll probably only get filled with a change of clothes or some food for a day out etc. No commuting use as I'm fine with my backpack and/or tank bag for that.
It would seem daft to throw away a perfectly usable monolock adaptor plate but if the matching box isn't going to be up to the job I'd prefer to know now and get myself a monokey adaptor plate before I spend money on a box.
Any thoughts? Cheers.
i have both the monolock and monokey plates and have used both boxes. The monolock is fine for lightweight stuff. bear in mind the alu rack itself only has a max loading of 7.5kgs. dont be silly and apply some common sense and you cant really go wrong. Monolock will be fine.

Tomor is right.
The boxes in reality can take a bit more than the advertised load.
That said, I tend to keep the weight as low as I possible can...monolock or monokey.
In practice, the weakest link in the chain is usually the rack .
The E370 and the E470 monolock boxes are good choices. They are double skinned.
edit: The monolock boxes can sometimes be a choice when you factor in the weight of the box.
Eg example, if a Monokey box weighs an extra 1.5Kg compared to a Monokey box of same volume, that's an extra 1.5Kg of useless weight to be supported by the rack and in theory, a loss of available load capacity of the box.
Cheers guys. Sounds like I ought to be ok with a monolock box.
I didn't know the racks loading capacity was 7.5kg so bearing that in mind it seems I couldn't utilise the full capacity of a monokey box anyway using the sw motech alu rack.
As a side question, can I ask people who have these boxes if the larger monolock models will genuinely hold two helmets? It seems there's some debate as to weather givis claims can be believed?

Depends a bit on the lid. Modular lids (flip front) can be wider to allow for the hinge. Integral sun visor lids can be taller.
I had the same quandry so found a local shop with display models and took my lid in to try it. Play nice if you do this and buy from the shop.
Hmmm, I think I'll defo need to try before I buy. Both me and the wife have internal sun visors in our lids (Sharks - Vision R & S900). Good news is they're only around 1.5kg each so won't overload the box.
Been looking at the E470 monolock box and reckon it could be what I'll plump for.
if you like i can check two vision r lids in an E470 tomorrow at work?

I had the cheaper monolock (46L) for 3 years now, done around 10k miles with mine on, including 3 euro trips, I have had probably 10kgs plus a 2.5kg tent strapped to the top of it, never had a single issue.
Personally, I don't think the extra cost of the monokey is worth it.

I guess build quality is decent enough then, and there does seem to be a big jump in price up to the monokey range, as you say. All the more reason to take a punt on a monolock I spose?

I wouldn't hesitate buying another one, if you seen the crap I've had in mine, you'd feel the same way :)

When I got my kit I was also worried about the weight limit.. but be sensible and its fine.
If you go with the rack limit being 7.5kgs then take the weight of the box off you'd probably only be left with about 4kg limit.

Cheers. It seems the overridding opinion is that it should be fine as long as it's not overloaded.
Also, Big thanks to Tomor for testing the 'two helmets will fit' theory on the E470. Very helpful cheers bud :D

Putting stuff in it while parked[2 lids/jackets or within reason]will not strain the mounts or fittings. The load bearing is more applicable while you are riding and the complete fitting is getting bounced about with suspension movement and wind blast, this is when you tend to get fractures appear in the mountings
