Following on from Tim's post the other thing I find not just annoying but dangerous is the number of people who do not clear all of the windows and brush the snow/ice lumps from their car roofs.Bad enough if you are in the following car but could be potentially hazardous if you are on a bike.
In this weather be careful when following high roofed commercial vehicles as it is not possible for drivers to climb 14-16ft up to remove the snow and ice from the body or trailer roofs and it can fly off in fairly big chunks

A year or two ago the police round here were pulling people over and ticketing them for not clearing their roofs for this very reason.

They did it last year here.
Thing is, it doesn't take two minutes to pick up a broom and push it off your roof. We get a build up the size of a double mattress on the Landy roof, as its got roof rails. Yes it is hard to push it off a tall vehicle, but its better than having that snow matress falling into a car behind.
Saying that, most folk these days don't know what a broom is!

Its the people who just clear a little square on the screen and then drive off with the sunshining in their eyes who are the worst offenders--Ahhgh.

ah, the tank commanders!

These gits deserve tickets more than anyone else! As do the reps who continue to drive in sub-zero icy conditions as if their German diseasal Eurobox car is exempt from the laws of physics and common sense...

Surely if you get a radiator full of snow off someones roof you should be keeping a more safe distance behind...

I've stopped loads of drivers over the last few days for just this. Tickets and advice, I even let them use my broom if they want! Each. One has to stay put though until the glasses clear.

so what if the snow is frozen to the roof like mine was this morning not a chance of it flying off due tot he 20mph crawl to work.

Cleared front doors, windscreen and rear glass and drove off like so...

Should I be locked up!

You don't have a lot of chance sweeping it off but when it starts to thaw and a 2ft lump of ice/ frozen snow comes off and hits a biker/pedestrian/kid or smashes a car windscreen you are still responsible.
I appreciate there is not a lot you can do early in the morning

erm, no!

At worst, a bit of advice. Anyway, under Pace code G, we can barely lock anyone up these days.

Can you get a wax or a polish or something that stops ice sticking?

My van is an absolute c*** for icing up the inside of the screen

Mine's the same Chris, most vans I've ever used in winter have been same also, the un insulated interior just creates condensation from the heat in the day going cold over night.
I keep forgetting to put a big piece of card over the windscreen at night, this helps a lot.

I salvaged a bit of velvet curtain, worked a treat for stopping the outside freezing!

Stick a dessicant pack in there.

If you see a telephone engineer around on your travels you might be able to beg one off them.

I tried some crystals from range in one of those chemical dehumidifiers, absolutely crap compared to some similar stuff I had before.

What annoys me in cold weather is cabbages in 4x4s going like nutters who don't grasp the simple physics that just because you can get moving doesn't mean you have any more braking potential.

dizzyblonde
16-01-13, 01:55 PM
That's because their 4x4s are equipped with gadgetry that turns them into superman.

Unless of course, they are actually good drivers and can actually drive without snow being of issue.

Says the chelsea tractor owner lol.

I'm talking about people going down a relatively empty lane on packed snow passing 20mph traffic at normal motorway speeds. Nothing short of f***ing stupidity. One person pulls out and their stopping distance would be measured in counties!

At the risk of sounding like a c***, reduced traction is always an issue even if you're Kimi Raikkonen. Ye canni change the laws of physics.

Ahh the annual rant/Britain not working from snow (It happens so rarely that we can;t prepare for it/its not economical)

I own a 2x4 that works better in snow than some range rover on low pro's ;)

If you'd have said the above in the first place, I wouldnt have made the assumption of you attacking the group of drivers you have issue with, as per usual.

Some folks never have a brain, even on sunny days.

yeah, they miss the point that their twice as good 4 wheel acceleration counts for almost nought braking as all cars brake on 4 wheels.

If you want a real driving experience try driving a 44ton artic on wet ice.It sorts the men from the boys and teaches you about traction and brakes. The road up or down from Mt Blanc in the dead of winter is a good learning curve.

I see them every time I use the M4. There are usually so many of them, all in lane three desperately trying to overtake each other, tailgaiting and bullying each other, no matter what the weather. Although I keep well clear of them it only takes one to clout another and those of us minding our own business in the near empty lane one are fooked. The icy weather almost makes them worse - as if they're trying to prove to the other idiots that they're not scared of the conditions.

What about container lorries with ice falling off the top of the container on roundabout and on inclines, happens regularly hereabouts.

Scary :-|

You were just trying to avoid the Toll road Mac ;)

We saw a Polish HGV trying to go over the summit of the Col du Glandon in September, single track road, hairpin bends and 12% gradient at the summit on the side he was driving up.

He looked a tad worried
