I dont see the big deal, a red warning????

Have they seen Canada?

It's only snow! Driving is safe if you be careful, tbh riding a bike is still safe as long as you take the proper measures and have decent tires.

Good man. When we had the snow a couple of years ago my work at the time closed down their site and told everyone to work from home. I drove in at lunchtime in my Skyline and spend an hour or so drifting around the car park.

It is utter bull. We've not had refreezing thawed snow yet. That's when it gets really ice, so there's no dramas. It's pretty pathetic.

Now must go and pick up all the dog turds form the garden before they get covered in snow else it'll be highly risky building a snowman later. :smt115

The fun with BMWs in the snow is to see if you can get ALL the yellow lights on at once. Extra points if you are going backwards at the time.

Although I do laugh at the advice on TV/Radio to only make essential journeys. Try telling the bosses of Britain that getting to work isn't essential.

I'm expecting to be grounded tonight at work.

At my unit, we only have one BMW X5. The rest of the fleet are 330's and a 530. I think two of those have winter tyres.

And to think, we wanted the Insignia VXR which has four wheel drive and is cheaper than the BMW's!

I did it notice that the head of fleet services has a shiny new BMW. Coincidence?

Had to go to the dentist this morning and it started to gently fall while I was in there. Now got 5mm or so on the garden so I've missed my chance of clearing the dog eggs. Luckily my pooch only ever goes right at the bottom of the garden so I can use the rest fairly safely - assuming we get enough to bother trying for a snowman of course.

Our local schools are now closing at lunchtime.

The thin layer of snow on my road has now started to provide entertainment. The first Beemer has made it up the hill as far as my house (they never get any further in these conditions) before revving furiously and ending up grinding his nearside rear on the curb. The slither back down only just missed a numpty in a compensating-for-something double cab pickup who tried taking a run up but just got sideways a few times. Not going to get much work done today at this rate.

Snowing in NW8. The boss just told me to go home whenever I like. He managed to fly in from India this morning just before they closed Heathrow again.

My 5 series was awful in the snow, the 7 series is much better - I think it is just so big and heavy that it's like driving a tank.

When I get home I shall have to shovel a pathway from the back door up the garden so Piggle cat can go and sit under the overhang of the summer house where it is dry without getting his paws too cold and wet. He doesn't like snow a lot and prefers it if I can clear it out of his way for him.

At least four inches here (Four Marks, Hampshire). A31 pretty much dead, school bus driver gave up when he saw a snow plough sliding sideways through the village. So all the kids are at home.

Had to go out and help Father-in-Law get his car up the hill to the house (works shifts, wasn't snowing when he went to work....). Nice little layer of ice under the snow on the non-gritted residential roads.... His mondeo was wheel spinning up the hill even in 3rd!. Much digging and pushing but we prevailed!

Traffic through the village not helped by his neighbour abandoning his BMW in the middle of the A31 near Tesco..... muppet!

When I lived in Scotland as a kid[teenager] still at school I delivered milk, rolls and the papers with the milk lorry every morning come hell or high water in three villages before I went to school. This was in the early 60,s when we had loads of bad weather but it was always done. It was a mile to the bakery/milk depot which I used to run at 5;30am seven days a week.I can never remember a school being closed for snow or cold, what on earth is wrong with today's modern society

As I have said so many times before, no Headteacher wants to close their school. It is a last resort on safety grounds.
In the old days everyone lived within walking distance of their school, both staff and students. These days so many of us live many miles aways, either because we can or because we have to. Also, in the old days, when my Mum was a teacher, there used to be reciprocal arrangements with schools, whereby the teachers walked to their nearest school to take on duties. This isn't possible now, with so many independent academies and the need for robust safeguarding measures (that's CRB checking and the like so the nasty people don't get at our children). In the good old days children got hurt, dreadful illness and other horrible things as well, but people seem to forget the bad stuff in the view from their rose tinted spectacles.

We cannot have hoards of children in a school without adequate supervision. If a kid got hurt the parents would be the first to complain. My school is still open but if the bus companies, which bus in nearly three quarters of our kids, call us saying they are getting them early or not at all, then we will have to let them go.

timwilky

DT I wish I knew, As a kid in the 60s if it snowed we had to get up to clear the 500 yards drive down to the road in order that my father could go to work. In modern parlance he would have been "Front of Office" at the coal face. If he didn't work, the company made no money so the 3 clerical "back Office" he employed would have to be paid out of profits instead of income.

Still it would be the only time we got a cooked breakfast before school.

There would be cops at the top of the valley we had to drive through stopping traffic and getting them to reduce their tyre pressure in order to safely navigate the hill down. At the bottom there were further cops with foot pumps to re inflate your tyres.

Never did I have a day off school because it had snowed.

However, as an apprentice at Motors we had one guy who regularly phoned in, sorry I am snowed in.

Third year of this a training officer was that P'd he borrowed a pool car to drive upto Pilkies. Writing it off in the snow he then dicovered the nearest house was indeed Pilkies 2 miles into the hills down a farm track.

Fortunately Pilkies parents were decent and let the shivering man dry out before taking him on the back of a tractor the 4 miles upto the main road where a non too happy training manager was waiting to collect the guy who had written off one of his cars. After that it was accepted that if Pilkie was snowed in. There was a little chance of seeing him until it thawed.

No new snow here today, the "surprise" 10mm we had yesterday as melted on all but the grass.

Every year, "prepare for heavy snow in west yorkshire" and it never comes, they should just add on the end of that warning "unless you're in a WF or LS postcode, then you're fine".

I want snow damn it!

Where've you all been? We had nearly 3 inches fall in a few hours on Monday morning, which then immediately started thawing then promptly froze an hour or two later, nice....since then it's been very very cold and Monday's snow hasn't shifted at all. Light snow showers every now and then since, the wind picked up yesterday so now all that is falling is just getting blown about and not really sticking. More heavy stuff predicted tomorrow...yey! Driving home from work last night, heard an announcement on the radio that 3 schools will be closed tomorrow cause of the snow, it hadn't even started snowing!

Was very light all night, prob 5mm this morning, drive to Milton Keynes without issue, got a bit heavier about 10am and all the MK staff started to go home, drove back to the Warwick office to find it empty, even the people who live in walking distance were "working from home". I reckon we have had 3 or so inches which for here is quite unusual.

I cycled to work on Liz's MTB this morning as I didnt want to risk getting the Audi stuck like I did a couple of years ago and not wanting to leave Liz without a car.

I could have walked its only 2 miles, but cycling is quicker. It was quite fun on the MTB.

Yet colleagues who I know live closer or at least an equal distance, refused to come in saying it was to snowy.

Roads were slushy but quite drivable on IMHO, thaw started at lunchtime and even our road which becomes impassable when we have snow as its off a steep hill and doesnt get gritted is pretty much snow free.

Same happens with my lot

People could walk to the office & should do, but don't. I say deduct a days leave or pay. Those that genuinely can't get in, then ok.

But on a separate issue, the news always say 'The police have advised do not travel unless it's absolutely necessay'. Its always done by a reporter who its out on some dark snow covered road, miles from anywhere.

Today the BBC had dragged a driver from the institute of advanced motorists from Wales to Bristol, where he'd driven on the M5 on the worst part, and what was this experts advice, I'll leave it to your immagination

Thats what HR are doing. They either loose a days pay or have to take a days holiday.

People that came in and went home early as advised to do get a full days pay, as do people who tried to come in got halfway and turned around, the effort is rewarded that way, but some people complain that it forces people to drive when they dont feel its safe to....

I think for one day a year just let people stay at home if they're not comfortable driving in the snow. It's not exactly going to bankrupt your business, especially when most people can do most things from home these days. If you forced your employee to come to work and they were badly hurt in an accident you'd feel pretty bad, you may also have a law suit on your hands.

Yes these are both true.

When I was first started with my lot, I didn't go in one snow day, because I didn't feel safe riding my CX500 in the snow.

My boss docked me a days leave.

I didn't do it again, and I managed to ride it in on another occasion in driving snow, only to find an Italian car driving the wrong way up the dual carriage way in my direction, because he couldn't see the other carriageway :smt104

But snow was ok to drive and ride in, no big hills round here, and it improved my skills no end.

The scariest was riding one dark morning, with ice covered roads for nearly 8 miles to the office. But people wouldn't think twice about not coming to work on days like this, which are far more dangerous than snow

yet one more thing wrong with this country, people demanding the right to full pay day off because of a little bit of snow.

the last time we had bad snow down here no one turned up for work and us that did were sent home early afternoon on full pay due to the lack of man power. Today we were sent home at 1pm for the same reason (ment to finish at 3:30 anyway). I drove 16 miles from a rural'ish area, including the motorway no problems. I tried to get to work this morning and got as far as the end of the road as Vivaro vans with 3mm of tyre which would of been replaced under old van scheme but now it's 2mm got stuck. And some pleb parking on the t junction wasn't risking it. Company vehicle too so if they won't provide me with a decent vehicle then i won't make a bigger effort than clearing the snow off my drive and trying to get out. HR department can stick that up their backside. What would you rather me stay at home or a welsh water van stuck in the side of someones pride and joy? Until the council clears 95% of roads properly and police enforce parking laws then people should be allowed time at least to travel to work by foot and then if companies but a claim into the council for loss of work time then it would change it

Of those who mention work mates failing to show, I bet those offenders are the same each time.
It's a work shy mentality, I think my gaffer only likes the fact I ride a bike when either:
he needs to get a set of documents somewhere sharp-ish (ad so he sends me).
Secondly: when its snowing, I live 16 miles from work, a staff of 15 with only 3 live further away than I do, but all drive! meaning when I make it in on 2 wheels none of the others have a leg to stand on.

Some folk take the biscuit, I fully support the snow work, snow pay policy. ;-)

FFS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Question of sport has been replaced by a special news program on the snow

No wonder there's a problem if 1 days snow warrants a special news prog

I'm not concerned about Q of S, but news worthy! FFS

There was naff all here this morning so everyone made it into work....

We sat there until about 11 watching it steadily build up to 4 or 5 inches around the cars before being sent home. Trouble is being sent home doesn't change the deadlines so, after the hour and a half it took me to get home, it's also taken me twice as long to do the work I had to do so I've only just finished for the night (home's just not set up for working - but there's bugger all chance of getting paid overtime for it).

I know what you mean about it being workshy culture - Last time it showed the only three who made it in were the three that lived furthest away. This morning, the people who were late because of the snow were those who live within a couple of miles of the office.

School started to send students (sen school) home at lunch time on Tuesday, last one left at 6.15. God knows what time they got home. No school Wednesday, back on Thursday but took almost two hours to do a 45 minute commute in the morning and thick ice in places on a main road. Off today.
Who knows what Monday will bring, but with stupid travel times, with students such as ours, it's not good to open without knowing the homeward journey can be made safely, and in good time.

Nearly as deep as during the Dragon Rally 1963!
On our scooters, two of us went up Horseshoe Pass, but had to turn back when the snow was above the telegraph poles!

At least after a couple of years you could afford to get some clogs!

Next door but one just had his V***o 4x4 delivered back to him on the back of a truck. Seems to have accumulated several chunks of what look like laurel wrapped around the wheel arches and suspension. Snigger.

I work from home half the time so yesterday was no issue. Had to go to the dentist for 9am so was back home before the worst of it landed. Worked a normal day except for the odd trip to the front window to laugh at the idiots trying to get up our hilly road.

Walked into HW to return a library book today. Slippery footpaths but hardly a soul about which was nice. HMV was heaving but it was delightfully quiet in Sainsbury's as I got a few odds and ends for lunch. More forecast for tomorrow which is irritating.

.

Why is it that knobs still think they can do anything they like in the snow in a 4x4

Should have watched Charlie Boorman the other night just to show that 4x4 aren't able to get up everything

That's because they have pseudo 4x4s

Nowt like an old knackered* one that plods with no bother! A 2x4 is great in the snow with good quality tyres and a good driver.
It's not supposed to have snowed today here. I opened the curtains at 7 this morning and its not stopped since then albeit a short period over lunch.

*ready to wheeze its last breath.

Weird, what forecast you looking at lol. Metoffice said we were expecting the white stuff most of the day with more heavy falls tomorrow... Just had dry powdery stuff today though, that hurts when it hits your face..

The only icy bit of road round here is in our cul due sac right outside our drive. Been having fun trying to wheel spin the car on it. Too miserable out to go walking so I stayed in and baked. If there's no more snow my colleagues will be eating cup cakes on Monday.

This

Went to see said neighbour today to let him know about the phantom tyre slasher hitting the cars parked down the hill on the level bit (his daughter's car was OK really) and he admitted that his XC60 is one of those softie 4x4s. No low range, no locking diffs or anything helpful. It's got better traction than a normal car but when going down one of the steepest and twistiest hills we have here in HW it just slid off the road and wedged itself sideways into a hedge. This is a hill I avoid when it's wet, never mind covered in snow.

Been snowing all day here - heavier now too.
