View Full Version : I hate computers

Today I have spent 8 hours struggling with a PC, well actually 2 PCs. I'm no IT expert but I'm not a total numpty.

The old one was just going slower than a slug on Valium. After switching it on it would take about 25 minutes until I could open any websites and it was constantly crashing. The box was making chattering noises the whole time so eventually I copied all my pics and videos over to a separate portable hard drive and then unplugged it and plugged in a different one a friend has given me. I resisted throwing the old one out of the window, but only because it would break the roof of the conservatory if I did.

The new one is quicker, I can get online but I still cannot get the VPN to my office working so cannot access any of my files. It just keeps saying 'Security certificate not valid' even though my IT department says it is.

And I have re-installed Photoshop but it won't accept the activations codes.

Aaaaaggggghhhhhhhh! A day wasted. ](*,)

I have had enough. I'm sick of anything computer shaped. I am going to have a large glass of wine and watch Fallout in Bargain Hunt to make me laugh again.

End of rant.

The first one sounds like it needs a good clean to free up some space....

Take the case off, Hoover all the dust out, restore to factory defaults... Reinstall needed software.

If you're doing it for real, check you've got a few gig spare on the hard drive. If not free up a bit of space.

Run up task manager (ctrl + shift + esc) and see what's consuming all the CPU and memory.

Turn off all the unnecessary start-up apps and services (MSconfig in XP or via task manager in more modern stuff)

If it still runs like a dog then do a safe boot (F8 at boot time) and see if it runs well then. If it does gradually start services until you find the one that kills it.

If still bad go for a fresh build. You can currently get Windows 8 for £25 so a good time to refresh your OS if you've got a sluggish machine.

Or turn it off and on again until it goes pop then feel justified in buying a new one.

I would have tried all that had Mr LPH's best mate not just upgraded his PC and given me the old one. But Windows 8 would be good as I want to get Adobe lightroom and it won't run in XP.

Think it's 25 for the upgrade edition.

Also been hearing rumours they're thinking of pushing the price up soon for all versions.

Might be on dodgey ground then with a new build on an old version of xp.
Though it's only had the one activation.

If you've got a legit XP license you can upgrade for £25. Basically new build so back up your files, nuke the box, re-install your apps and job jobbed..

Normally when a security cert is found invalid it is because it is for an address other than what you are trying to connect to. Are you sure the connection settings for your VPN are correct and match up properly? Maybe it needs to be IP address based or use an alternative domain name? Maybe the VPN client can be told to ignore this issue?

If you haven't already, ask the IT department to provide you with the correct VPN settings to use and then double check them against what you have...

This will more than likely be a very amateur and not very good reply but i was having 'security cert not valid' issues and it turned out that the time and date were wrong on my laptop and when i put them right the problem was fixed. Worth a check.

Agree with this too.

My netbook's BIOS battery must be on the way out, as when I start it up, it defaults to 1/1/2003 or similar.

Started doing this last year
