View Full Version : Aftermarket exhaust can and insurance?
Hey, if I installed a new end can on my bike and it has no e markings, and I told the insurance comany. Would they ask for a e mark number or anything? P.s its a viper race can with no baffles:D:D

They would probably charge you for the privilege of the declared mod.
No BS/e-mark is a failure to abide by C&U / European type approval regs. Most cops are too thick to know the law but upset one who does and you could get a ticket.
and before anyone says that MOT is ok, VOSA rules do not mean compliant with C&U.

If Its going to improve performance it will cost more.
But your have to sort out its fueling to realise any small increase.
ps
Make sure thers no
"Not for road use" markings on it.
If there are your be in hot water...

Declared the exhaust on my sons SV with no increase on premium. It's best to declare mods no matter how small, don't give the insurance company a way out of paying in the event of a claim.

+1
In a previous life I have thrown out insurance claims when I have found the vehicle not to be as declared.
The nuts thing about an after market can is that it will actually cost the insurance company less to replace than a standard can. So only a poor company should charge for an non performance enhancing can.
However, my experience is that it is not really the company that is charging. it is a poor broker grabbing a mid term change fee.
Hastings gave me 3 mods for no increase in premium ,But as the exhust didn't increases Hp just noise they didn't worry.
Mind you they didnt worry about gearing from S to N ,
That made it accelerate better???
Ok thank you all, it doesn't not for road use on it, neither does it have a e mark. What atchually is a e mark? And will I be asked to prove it has one to the insurancecompany, like read a number or something ?
"e" Mark is a euro conformity reg.
if you have one it meets a minimum level of quality.
ie exhaust is noise .
The e-mark is an EU-wide piece of legislation, and an equivalent United Nations standard known as the "E-mark" is applied in non-EU countries. In the UK, Section 60 of the Road Traffic Construction .The UK body responsible for regulating e-marking is the Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA)
but don't belive all you read...
Thanks now I understand that but will I be asked anything about it to the insurance company if a tell them I changed the can?
you can only call or mail them and see what a particular agent wants .
3 times I have declared exhausts all they asked was"Does it increase performance".
Ok thank you. I'lljust say no lol
ps
get a baffle for it .
it will look like your trying when you put it in at MOT time.
£10 of ebay
Ok thanks, do mot stations cheak for a e mark?
I'm not sure, but if it's stupidly loud they can refuse to test it. I declared my pipe change with Bennets, no charge or premium increase. But thats only because I have more mods than they can log!
Lol does your can have a e mark ?
Ah see I'm not sure about mine because it does not have one.
Did your insures ask you anything about a e mark?
this is what they look for

Information Method of Inspection Reason for Rejection 1. Examine the condition of the exhaust system including the silencer(s) and mountings for security, deterioration and completeness. 1. a. Any part of the exhaust system missing or excessively deteriorated b. a leak in the exhaust system which causes excessive noise to be emitted c. an exhaust system mounting missing or one which is in such a condition that it does not fully support the exhaust system. 2. With the engine running assess the effectiveness of the silencer(s) in reducing as far as is reasonable the noise emitted. 3. Check the silencer(s) on all machines for any unacceptable markings. 2. A silencer that is in such a condition or is of such a type that the noise emitted is clearly in excess of that which would be produced by a similar machine fitted with a standard silencer in average condition. 3. A silencer marked ‘NOT FOR ROAD USE’, ‘TRACK USE ONLY’ or similar wo
wow that was I good bit off infomation, answerd all my questions now thank you :-)
When I took my ZX6 for its MOT (I have a Da Vinci race can) It had a baffle in it .
He did say I don't have to bother putting it in nest time as its quiet clear from the lack of soot it had only just be fitted for the test :)
I bought an E marked exhaust strap off ebay, cures the issue of no marking.
Yer I'm get a baffle for my mot, and good idea I'm look now. :-)
Just looked on there and there's nothing :-(
