hi OMO,

I have an unlisted home landline number. the only people that have my number are family and friends (in South Africa) and I NEVER give it out as a contact number on any forms on the WWW but today I received a "we can help you claim compensation" call from some company who advised they got my number off a list from a company called DATA OCTOPUS..

(the compensation relates to when I crashed the SV and nobody else was hurt/damage limited to me and my bike so I am not sure who they wanting me to sue  :smt036 - I've had these calls on mobile and eventually said to one company "yeah sure, take my case but who am I suing btw...." didn't hear from that company again)

I realise I can list my number on the TPS to stop unsolicited (freaking annoying) calls but how the hell did my number appear on their "marketing" list in the first place? :smt089

Surely in order to get my number I would have had to submitted it via a channel and consented to phone calls from "selected 3rd parties" ??

I'm really annoyed about this cos I made the stupid mistake of supplying my mobile number without thinking further than my nose on some WWW forms and the calls and texts I received were incessant for almost 2 years (didn't know about TPS, so basically ignored the calls/texts after a while) and I really really don't need that harassment/annoyance on my landline as well.

I wonder if I contact DATA OCTOPUS if they would be so kind as to tell me where they got my number? :geek:

none of friends here have my LL number so none of them would have inadvertently passed it on...

..and your phone company. Like everyone else these days they probably have a third party marketing opt-out you could have missed.

it will be your insurance company selling your data. and before anyone says bull then explain how my wife suddenly go bombarded with insurance company life, car ,holiday etc.etc quote letters the week after we got a mobility car.

there is an insurance database and they all ''share'' data.

data protection act! yeah right.....

everyone is at it as there is BIG money to be made.

Motability probably provided her information to their various insurance "partners".

As you say, everyone's at it.

The comparison sites also sell your details. I know this as they're the only people I ever give my number too and I ALWAYS make sure I check/un-check the marketing box as appropriate!

possibly... but I've had the number for almost 2 years and only now got the first call

I wonder how many rude responses / ignored calls / verbal abuse / hold on I'll call them / abruptly ended calls these "marketing" people have to go through before they actually get a taker...

A few years ago I had SKY TV, anyways to have BB you need a phone I didn't even know the number myself so never gave it out to anyone. So how did we end with missed calls, answer phone message ect?

I actually told one comapny to stop calling, they total don't care, next day hello sir do you want insurance:smt068

If you get a text, phone call ect don't answer reply its normally auto dialled ect if you reply they will know its a live no then ur screwed!

TPS doesnt cover calls from centres or stupid recordings from off shore companies

TPS is no good! I used to work in a call centre, we got your number no problem at all. Then bombard you, even you asked us to take it off the system, we would but then your number would be put back on a month later!
Data Optus is where your number would of come from, I'll ask my friend who still works there for the Data Optus contact details as we got data from them to.

Start assassinating the shareholders and putting videos of the directors family being electrocuted on youtube, that would be pretty effective, and quite entertaining.

Can you get your details removed from Data Optus' database???

I just get my eldest to answer the phone. He has a lot of fun with these companies on my behalf.

These days with the advent of IP telephony the call center probably isn't even in the UK. TPS doesn't mean squat to them if they're abroad.

In some cases I suspect that companies are simply auto-dialling their way through the entire range of numbers assigned to a the mobile companies. I've had them calling about my Orange contract even though my phone hasn't been with Orange for ten years.

Oh the best thing to do is when then call up for asking for you...

Is to say, yes he is here i'm his personal assistant look could I put you hold while I'll try to find him for you.

Then play something like this as the hold music

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnT7pT6zCcA

You get the idea, I had one guy on "hold" for about 15 minutes I think he hung up in the end;)

You can demand or have Calller I.D. Display from B.T. if your phone is fairly modern, it won't stop the b*****s calling but at least you can see if it's withheld or international. Or alternatively for fun, if you do a bad impression of somebody famous talk to them in that voice:rolleyes:
