I spent a few frustrated hours yesterday trying to help Chris8886 switch from an iPhone to a Samsung Galaxy S3 mini. And failed. There seem to be several problems.

I installed Kies and this gives you step by step programme to move everything across including photos, messages, music and contacts. I have managed to plug both phones into Chris's laptop, but when I try the programme it says there isn't enough space on the Galaxy. Chris has installed a 32gb micro SD and Kies 'sees' it there but won't seem to allow data to be added to it. I tried formatting the card and taking it out, putting it back in etc but no luck.

So as the phone has a certain amount of memory free I tried just to move the contacts across. It shows them being copied across in Kies but once complete Chris has 947 'unknown' people in his contacts, none of them with any numbers or emails attached.

So then I tried to export his iPhone contacts to his Gmail account assuming I could then re-import them to the Galaxy. No joy there either, following instructions on several forums a couple of the buttons I should be hitting in iTunes to make this happen are greyed out in iTunes.

It took me 5 minutes to move everything from my old Nokia to my Galaxy SII and thought it would be as simple from an iPhone.

What am I doing wrong?

I'd approach this differently.

The phone is just a device for accessing data, it shouldn't really be the storage medium anymore and the "one click migrate" programs either work or don't, but if they don't why can be frustrating.

I'd migrate his contacts up into a cloud storage service (gmail would be the first choice) from the iPhone, or see if you can access the apple contacts thing directly from the S3 mini?

Kies should allow you to just drag & drop the files you need but if you plug the phone in windows should see it as a drive. If you're browsing from the phone the file system is /sdcard for the main system, with a sub-folder called /externalsd or similar inside it. It's possible you're trying to move tons of rubbish into the internal memory.

Tried most of that yesterday but iPhone isn't accessible from laptop. It shows up in iTunes but when I back up the address book to the cloud I can't find it.

For the Galaxy S3 I'd ignore Kies, for the iPhone, can you not migrate the contacts in-phone as it were?

Not sure if it's asking you to setup sync from iTunes as well, or just the device but it may help?

Jambo - Google Sync via that method was discontinued for new users on Jan 30th :-(.

Contacts, calendars should deffo be synced via some form of "Cloud" (hate that word) service. What Jambo suggested was my preferred method until Google cut it off.

http://support.google.com/mail/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=2753077&topic=21369&ctx=topic is the new method - following that should get contacts and calendars into the gmail account and therefore onto the Galaxy.

Photos would be done manually, the iphone should show up as a generic camera device under windows.

Music again will be a manual job.

Messages etc are beyond my Android experience.

Ah, out of date (but by less than usual)!

If you want the old messages does the iPhone have an equivalent of "SMSbackup+" that I use on the Galaxy to save / restore? Maybe that could shunt them off the iPhone to google mail.
