Hey all, Im looking at a 2005 sv650 with 36k miles. I'm told it was used to commute a long distance to work on a daily basis so mostly highway miles. What are your thoughts?

If its in good nick with some evidence of being serviced properly then should be fine.Check the valve clearances have been checked and its had regular oil changes.Buy it cheaply.

As long as it's been looked after, regularly serviced and cleaned then high mileage is nothing to worry about, but definitely use it to haggle the price down.

Over and above buying any second hand bike there are no further checks to conduct based on that mileage. A dealer history is not a guarantee that the bike will be well maintained so find out if the owner got his/her hands dirty or if the mechanic is a mate of theirs/likely to have mugged them off.

Look for proof of work completed, ask when the throttle bodies were last balanced.
1- it makes you sound like you know a bit about bikes, which may make them second guess giving you a load of bs.
2- question it if they hesitate any more than you expect if you asked when did they last go on holiday.

If they don't know what you're on about then I'd be concerned.

Assuming you buy it then If you can afford the time I would certainly strip out the lower link for an inspection. replace if needed but certainly give all moving parts a grease.
Assuming its been a while since its last proper service I'd get in there and do it a major one as per the manual. Not forgetting giving it a right good thrashing! You'd be amazed at the benifit one of those can be.

Try harder lol, Tom_The"I dont ride my bike ever"_Great has a 10 plate SV with just over 2k on the clock... He only put just over 600miles on it last year, if he put that up for sale no one would believe it.

Marias 2001 only had 5k or so on it when she bought it year before last.

Luckily she is not a complete wet lettuce and has been racking up miles at a decent rate since then.

Both mine and Kates have 11k on them. Ones a K3, the other a K4. Hopefully I'll get a chance to use mine a bit more this year!

Where can I find this individual? Maybe I can make him an offer he can't refuse! TBF, I've only had mine less than a year now. It had 8k on the clocks when I got it. :smt016
