View Full Version : Table top game idea

Ok, so I've never been into warhammer or anything like that, but when I was about 13 or 14 I built a few of those plastic kit tanks and stuff. Me and a mate invented a game with tape measures and had a few little turn based battles. It was pretty rubbish.
Anyway, was just thinking tonight that could be quite fun if you could actually fire stuff and knock the other units down. That'd make it a bit more my cup of tea. It could be as simple as spring loaded bb guns on small 2 inch figures and more powerful bb guns on tank units. Rather than rolling dice and all that lot your little figures could move a set distance each turn and fire each gun a certain number of times.
So basically you'd kick the wife and the dog out of the lounge, or on a summer day head out into the garden, stick your units at one end and your mates at other, then spend the next few hours pivoting guns on little figures and firing bbs at each other. A hit is a kill. I suppose you could make cover out of things easy to knock down like cards or coasters.
Am I just tired and talking crap or does that sound like a fun idea? If so, how would you go about making them? I wouldnt want a kids action figure with a 2 foot range. We'd need a good 15-20 foot range with a slight arch to make it remotely fun and the figures would have to be small so you could have about 30 of them all firing stuff about.

That just sounds like soldiers we used to play as kids, mini howitzers used to fire spring loaded plastic balls, then a marble for heavy shells.

Lego cannons fire.

Seen quite a few little remote control tank sets with infra red guns. Also there's some larger scale models which do fire BB type plastic pellets. Could be fun to use small paintball type ammo.
I've been looking for an excuse to buy something like this for ages but I think the wife would give me grief.

Would probably need second mortgage as well :-x

The idea isn't so great now I'm wide awake. Still, worth thinking about next time I'm half asleep! :D
Those BB tanks would be pretty cool if the guns can raise and lower. You'd have to have some sorta paper target on the roof of each one to use as a kill marker ... like takeshi's castle. :) Lego cannons wouldn't be powerful enough for what I envisage though. Reckon you could make something fairly easily with plastic tube + spring + basing locking mechanism.
Ok, will return to this idea next time I'm half asleep on the couch. :D

No infantry but the tanks are the bit everyone wants anyway.

infrared is boring, you need something that could have your eye out if not careful to keep it interesting!

Anything that has a whiff of Dungeons and Dragons will be an instant turn off to anybody with common sense or, what's it called again? Oh yes - a LIFE!
Needed to mend something plastic on Saturday and the only place I could find suitable glue with a very fine applicator was Games Workshop. I so wanted to punch the simpering, long haired, pasty-looking weed that served me it was scary. Had to leave quickly without looking at the table full of nerds painting their models or it would have been worse. I'm never like this normally.

I had those. Driving was quite fun but ...

.. this is true. Shooting was crap. This idea is based around the premise of being able to blow **** up on a very small scale in your lounge. :) Lasers won't come close to the satisfaction of aiming a BB at the head of a little solider hiding behind the pillow on the floor and sending him flying off down the hallway.
When I say "satisfaction" what I actually mean is "mild amusement suitable for a rainy day inside". :)

Games Workshop is a brilliant place trev. Means they're all in one place, kept away from normal people. :)

How about mounting a co-axial camera to the main gun with a direct feed into your smart phone? Could record or battles and post them on You Tube.

Surely you just need to skip the table top stuff and get the old computer fired up for a game of Global Thermo-Nuclear War (http://www.globalthermonuclearwar.net/) if you want a bit of war games fun? :D
