View Full Version : Do you send flowers etc?

So it's that day when the shops try and fleece us of all our money on scratchy unflattering red lace lingerie, overpriced fizz, nasty palm oil enhanced chocolates and the florists make a killing flogging a dozen half dead roses for £100 a pop.
Could it be any more unromantic?
Or am I just a cold-hearted bitch?

This year card, roses, pressie (DVD) and we're making a meal together tonight. However, I do think the whole thing is ridiculous and should be banned. It's a cash cow blown into a commercial enterprise by retailers, and men are guilt tripped into fake demonstrations of affection. In previous relationships I've always tested the water to see how little I could get away with.
If a woman only gets flowers, pressies or displays of affection on valentines day and brithdays then the guy is bored with you. If you're happy to allow yourself to feel better about that situation by a commercialised day then fair play to you and your incredible state of denial. :D

The wife gets a card. Simply because she demands them. Personally I think the whole concept of special days is simply commercial hype and should be done away with. Issue for me is 14th feb is the daughters birthday. Trying to celebrate that is impossible with every table booked with pathetic doe eyed couples.

I get flowers whenever my beloved decides he wants to give me them. Today is no different.
We both give each other cards on Valentines Day.
We are incredibly romantic, even with two children and hard times, we still take time to show we love each other.
What's wrong with a bit of romance? My mum and dad still do Valentines after 37 yrs of marriage. I wonder if my dad got interflora to send the bouquet to the right address this time?

Oh and another thing, all us guys feel the same. Standing at the card shelf I was taking my time trying to find the right one. About 5 or 6 guys came through in that time, all f-ing and blinding, commenting on the inflated card prices. One had a good rant at me. Another one literally grabbed the cheapest card and fecked off.
I went to a florist for my flowers. 3 or 4 guys in there highly resenting how much they were paying for something that would be dead in 4 days. My favourite line was "She won't like them anyway because I bought them" AHAHAHAHAHAAHAH. :D

Its retarded. But like a lot of things like this (new years eve, my birthday etc.) its a nice excuse to do something. I do hate going out for dinner on valentines though.

I agree with valentines day in principle. It acts as a reminder to people that normally wouldn't do anything romantic.
I don't agree with florists and shops inflating prices to take advantage of this though.
I've bought a card but we agreed to go out for dinner on Friday.

I was forced to the Keith D option because I don't have anyone to get a card for.
I don't mind valentines day as a concept but I think too much emphasis is placed on spending over real romance.
I buy a card because otherwise I look bad and I wouldn't bother if I didn't have to.
If I didn't love her I sure as hell wouldn't stick around.

I agree with Tim. To me Valentines day is a corporate sham used to pull cash from an already exploited mass. I tell my other half every day that I love her, but to be honest we have more important things to do than mong about like some doe eyed simpletons, so for us tonight it is the pub with our mates as usual. :smt007

Now Fizz, I think you know I didn't mean you!
I don't really like roses or chocolate so would be quite offended if I received either as it would show the person really didn't know me that well. I'd much rather get bought a nice big piece of stilton and some lillies.
Chris8886 is being all bah humbug about it which must mean he didn't receive a card.

no i havn't received anything, wouldn't want to either! it really is one of my most hated days of the year. if you love someone, you love them every day of the year, not just on this one day when as has been said, all these companies inflate their prices and rip you off for everything!

Cards, yes. By mutual consent we don't do gifts as per the justified inflated price comments above. Probably a takeaway as a treat to avoid the slushy couples.

Just do what LPH does. Buy a gift for someone married who you met once 5 years ago and leave them utterly confused. :D

I don't do this valentines nonsense. I don't need to cook special meals as its me that cooks every night anyway.
But, from looking at the poll results think the most important thing I've learnt about this thread is Dizzy is wearing racey underwear this evening.... AND SHE'S ACTUALLY A BLOKE??? :smt082

That's about it for me to, I cook the dinner half the time so just cook something that we don't have very often like a nice fillet steak something like that

Now just hang on. I MADE the cupcakes, none of your bought from a shop nonsense. I see the elbow surgeon every couple of months, sometimes with his wife. And I also made them for all my colleagues, my physio, my husband and the live in cat-sitter ex-boyfriend. None of them are confused.

Trust me, they're all proper goo-goo-gah-gah. Or perhaps this is just London and outskirts mentality. Where I come from if a woman gives another woman's husband a gift on valentines day they have to fight each other to the death, generally topless.

I haven't given anyone's wife a gift. Well unless you count Heather in the MCC Archive, she is married and she ate one of my cupcakes, but I don't think it means we are about to elope and have a gay marriage after both divorcing our husbands. She just like cupcakes.

Just because you went in and edited it afterwards don't get all self righteous. You also said earlier that you had had an argument with 5 or 6 gays in a card shop while shopping for your misses!
You are just all bitter and twisted because you only got 1 card.

I'm not a fan, I've paid above the odds for some very mediocre meals in the past.
I've had some really nice valentines days it must be said, but generally I think the whole thing's regimented and scheduled romance. Dating as foreseen by Orwell...

I'm oddly up for it this year, its been a mad few months since moving house amongst other things. Through that time the wife and I never have much time for been mr and mrs. Everything else seems to take front row and has done for a while.
So because of that I'm glad to have bought her some flowers and to be going for a meal tomorrow night, nothing major but its still something I'm looking forward to.
