View Full Version : The Turban Loophole
Fallout

I'm working on a Highway Code app at the moment. Picking up some gems I didn't know as I go, for example Sikh's don't need to wear a crash helmet if they have a turban on. Think of that what you will, but having watched Police Camera Action I also know that traffic police will only make 1 attempt to stop someone not wearing a helmet before discontinuing the chase.
So here's the plan: buy a crash helmet which is as small as possible but still provides protection (we don't want to be stupid after all - open faced skull cap would be the only one really). Wrap a turban round it so it looks like we're not wearing one. Add false numberplate. Ride around apparently legally. If you choose to ride like an utter numpty you'll get away with it. Nobody will chase you because you appear not to have a helmet and you can never be traced.
See, criminal mind in full flow.
Obviously I'm not condoning this sort of behaviour, it's just an observation. Ain't the law silly?

Lets just get a load of turbans and we'll ride about town wearing them with our normal plates.
No more dangerous than a bicycle if we stay under 20mph
Get your camera, I bet it would be youtube gold.

To be honest, I'm not sure if a Turban could take much more than 20mph, unless of course it was a Titanium Turban.

Maybe we could market woven kevlar turbans with padded inserts for the safety concious sikh?
Good idea. No-one's thought of this before.
We'll make a million Rodders. :p

I was wondering if anyone else would remember that.

I remembered that. I just did some googling to see if there was a product for Sikh's that would do the job. Couldn't find one. Found lots of interesting debates though. Here's my favourite quote ...
Actually, while a helmet is definitely, a good idea,
the principle that the government can require
that one be worn, is an unwarranted infringement
on the riders freedom.
There are proven cases where a helmet has caused an accident
(by restricting peripheral vision eg.).
It should be the riders choice.
That said, that turban of the Sikh's offers about as much
protection as a helmet.
There's a lot of padding there, and being twined in his hair,
it's fastened in place.
Really? So all this money going into helmet research is pointless. All we needed to do was wrap a cloth around our hair all this time!
The mind boggles.

When Chris8886 and I went to Windsor at new year we spotted the Scots Guardsman who wears his turban instead of the traditional bearskin. Good thing really as if he had to wear the bearskin over his turban it would be so wide he'd never get through the guard gate into the castle to guard the Queen.
MCC has a very strict dress code to get into the Pavilion. However one is allowed to wear 'religious dress'. I'm always tempted to turn up on my day off and try and get in there wearing Dalai Lama or Maasai robes and see if they would let me in.
Is this post for real ?.
look into google...
ps i am a sikh...and no i don't ware a turban... but i will be cremated in one...
i always knew it was just a matter of time .................

@fallout: maybe it DOES offer as much protection as a helmet, but given the lack of chin strap and visor I can only assume that the protection must be supernatural.

There is a lot of guff spouted in the US about whether helmets should be worn.

Which post were you referring to? Mine or the one I quoted? If it's mine then obviously yes. I'm deadly deadly serious. :p If it's the one I quoted, then who knows? There are muppets in every race, religion and creed!
