I bought a DAB portable radio and am disappointed at the reception. Listening to Planet Rock the other night and kept loosing reception! I thought digital radio was the future? With brilliant reception or have I got it wrong?

I got one of the Marshall Amp style ones from Pure a few years ago and the reception in my house is awful. The only place it works is on the kitchen windowsill and even then it only picks up about 5 stations, one of which is Planet Rock, plus Radio 1/2/3/4. I really only listen to Radio 4 and 5 Live Sports Extra when cricket is on but I now rely on internet streaming of radio elsewhere in the house.

difference is where once you got a bit of tuneful static with DAB you get blocks of silence.
Not great IMHO.

I have one in the garage and its forking crap. Reception constantly gets broken up and I listen to planet rock, I have to put it up on top of the garage door back supports otherwise it gets even more disrupted when you move around.
I was looking into getting one for the car but I dred to think what the reception would be like on the move

It's often rubbish. Bought Lady Poppy a nice Roberts DAB radio but the number of channels kept dropping. Ended up without R4 it was that bad no matter where in the house we tried. It's now back in its box in the loft until things improve or her elderly FM radio quits on her.
I have DAB in the car - standard in my Focus. The reception I get in there is better than in the house but it depends on where you drive to. The Arrow (rock, with no adverts) is fine sat in my driveway but by the time I get to Bracknell it's gone.
My dad bought himself a portable DAB for his shed - he gets less channels than he gets on FM, which is not included on his portable. It's just an expensive ornament that only picks up Alan Partridge on Radio Norfolk.

I've gotta say that my DAB radio that sits in the kitchen gets great reception on most channels, but I should bl00dy hope so I'm only 10 miles or so from the transmitter and I can see it out of the window...
More importantly if it wasn't for DAB radio I probably wouldn't be getting to listen to Alison Mosshart this weekend on Radio6Music....

I've got a portable in the kitchen and my amp has a DAB tuner, both of which get great reception. I only bought them for 6music - well worth it.

Not enough stations on DAB no biker FM so streaming into the garage you need to get one of these, also covers manuals and the odd ebay purchase

I cab see the transmitter from my home and reception of some channels is terrible. I have a cheap asda one in the garage and a pure one in the kitchen. both of which only get about 15 channels and about 3 of interest to me.
They are over hyped. Yes the sound is better, but only if you have perfect reception in the first place. They need to seriously boost the signal strength.
I look on it like itv digital, reception was terrible so nobody wanted it as it pixilated al the time. Freeview has a better signal and works well.
Our DAB was crap until I stick a wire diploe aerial outside. Works a treat now. DAB aerials are shorter than FM dipoles so worth getting a DAB one for a couple of quid. Also with some messing I eventually got the best reception with one end of the dipole vertical and the other at 45 degrees.
The wire ones are very thin so just passes through the window and was then temporarily blue-tacked to the wall. The temporary blue-tack has done a stirling job for the last 4+ years.
We are in a very poor reception area here and can barely get FM in the house. The main RM receiver is wired into a proper old-school roof top circular aerial as without it I could get virtually nothing.
I had DAB in a hire car the other day and it was absolutely bang on from the M3 all the way to North Yorkshire.

I'm just about to replace the stereo in our car with a Sony dab one, the aerial that comes with it doesn't look great so I may well replace that with a better one.
Will let you know how it goes
