View Full Version : Indicator Flashing Rate?

I have some mini indicators on my '99 SV650S. They have always been there and I don't have the originals. Over the years I have replaced some of them from what I originally had and have replaced some of the bulbs, so I've no idea the make, model, or specification of them.

Anyway occasionally they flash a little erratically and with the MOT coming up I'd like to solve this. I have checked the wiring and can find no loose connectors or damaged wires and have remedy's in place for the usual weak spots. I noticed the other day that they would flash to fast when the bike was idling, but when I increased the revs to 2k they flashed at the correct rate. So I'm thinking that the bulbs might be drawing a little to much power as I've seen this on other bikes before.

So who knows what spec bulbs I should be running and if an increase or decrease in wattage might help?

Stick a 135* Ohm 5W resistor in series for a typical 20mw LED.

*Or nearest one you can get

But I'm not running LED's these are standard filament type bulbs so I shouldn't need a resistor...

standard indicators bulbs would be 12v / 21w I believe

If the flash rate is erratic, perhaps one of the indicators has a poor connection and is stopping working, throwing off the flash rate for the remaining bulbs? I know you say you've checked this but I also know intermittent electrical faults are my least favourite thing, and because it looked fine once doesn't mean it always is.

If you have a mix of 21w/23w etc etc this could change the flash rate, it did with my pointy. As i needed a quick fix before MOT i bought one of the 7 pin flasher relays off ebay for £18 and that solved the problem.

Remove all bulbs, clean up the connections and refit.

Its probably a simple issue like that, and when you go over a bump the connection goes a little funny.
