Hey all
Last weekend I had a flat battery, so thinking the battery was past it's best I bought a new battery. The bike had only been stood a couple of weeks, so my reasoning was that the battery wasn't holding a charge anymore. Anyways, I put the new battery on today and the bike fired up fine, but she seems ti be running badly. Is ok at low revs, however if I rev the engine she backfires intermitently and generally sounds rough. I put a multimeter on the battery and the idling charge is normal, but if I rev the engine it isn't rising and maybe even dropping slightly. So, it seems the battery isn't charging either. I'm hoping to limp to the garage next weekend, but in the meantime I was hoping somebody may be able to give me some pointers.
P.S. The bike was running fine last time I rode her about three weeks ago.
Thanks in advance guys.

Do a search for charging circuit check, then post back with specific voltages and tests.

Don't go buying things until you've shown that they're almost certainly at fault.

Would that cause the bike to run poorly also?

Dont know if you've seen this http://www.electrosport.com/media/pdf/fault-finding-diagram.pdf fella but its well worth a check through HTH

Yes. If there isn't enough charge or generated current getting to the ingition system the spark will be too weak to run smoothly.
My Landrovers alternator went just after Christmas. The voltage output was down to 4 which was enough to keep it running at a tick over but if I drove it the revs died above 1500.
Run the above check list. I'm sure you'll find a fault there.

Thanks for the replies guys. I won't have time to do any checks this week due to work. When I rang my local mechanics and described the symptoms he instantly said it's the regulator/rectifier. Obviously he'll do some disgnostics, but this is one of the SV's achiles heels. If it is the RR I think I will be upgrading to a better unit.

Just spoke to the garage after dropping the bike off this morning. Turns out it was the reg rec which he's now replaced. Thankfully he's used one off another bike so not the SV cr$p one (possibly a Gixxer but not certain). As a bonus, he's also fitted a set of shorty levers for me I bought off ebay. Happy days :)

Hey all,

So I seem to be having battery trouble as well and trying to figure out if it's the cold, battery or charging circuit. After charging the battery I get a voltage reading of 13.40 V. Then when the bike is idling it is also somewhere around 13.4. Raising the RPMS to 2000 I get 13.6 V and when I'm at 5000 RPM the voltage drops down to 11 V. Is this the charging circuit or do I get a new battery or wait until the weather is a bit warmer (currently around 2 degrees C).
