Name this Film

O.k, so apologies if it's blindingly obvious but i have no clue what it is.


I must have watched it nearly 20 years or so ago and I can't remember a lot about it but here goes...

In the beginning there are these kids in some kind of prison camp set in the future, and there punishment is to dig holes in cubic metres, they cheek off a guard and he keeps giving them a bigger and bigger hole to dig...


Further on, they get captured by a bad guy who has this special kind of operating table that he straps you to, and this machine scans your brain and works out what you're most afraid of and projects that image onto your skin.
One kid is afraid of ants and at once his skin is crawling with them, another is afraid of fire and he thinks he skin is burning etc.

I know it's not a lot to go on but does anyone have any ideas??

the beginning part reminds me of a book called 'Holes'. The second part i don't recognise, but it partially reminds me of a film called 'Are You Scared Yet?'. Not much help, but maybe you read the book and watched the film while drunk?!

Could it be Solarbabies (1986) (http://www.imdb.co.uk/title/tt0091981/)? That was in a list (actually it's probably in many) of truly awful movies I read not so long back and it roughly matches your synopsis from what I can recall (I've never seen it though, only read a brief snippet about the movie).

Just done a quick search about the film and found this transcript (http://www.angelfire.com/tx3/80schild/solarbabies1.html) which makes mention of cubic meters (that's the thing that stood out for me remembering what I'd read) and also the ants:

(Interrogation Room)
(The Leader of the Chikani is now strapped to a type of metal device. He has ants crawling all over his body and he's screaming.)
Grock: Do you wish to change your story?
Leader: It is true! Please! Please, please, please…
Grock: Relive him.
(A button is pushed and the ants suddenly disappear.)

Can't recall the blog I read with the list of movies (though I'd have mostly gotten to it by browsing Reddit), but to get that transcript I just Google'd "solarbabies kid table afraid ants" ( https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=solarbabies+kid+table+afraid+ants) (my search history must be amusing to browse) as don't remember the ants being in what I read.

Was that the film? It sounds terrible I must say :-)

(I see Chris already got it now, it was also called solar babies. Not available on UK DVD I'm afraid only American)
