View Full Version : Firing On One Cylinder and Binding Back Brake.
Hi all
Off recent my 2000 SV 650 S at start up only fires on one cylinder. After riding a bit with the choke on it settles down and doesnt switch off at the lights. Sometimes if I turn off the choke whilst riding the throttle response becomes very weak as if theres no fuel getting to the motor and the bike wants to switch off.
The other issue is that the rear brakes seem to be binding as when I try wheeling the bike in neutral its really difficult however this only happens sometimes.
Any ideas guys and if someone in or around the Croydon area is available to help me, it would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Which cylinder isn't firing? The front cylinder is well known for developing a mis-fire due to it being in the firing line for all the road crud kicked up by the front wheel.
What condition is the rear brake in, if its got a load of crud built up aroud it the pistons in the caliper may not be returning fully and still apply pressure on the pads causing them to touch the disc, if they are clean it could be a warped disc. I'd suggest removing the caliper and having a look at the pistons, if your comfortable with doing so.

first port of call would be to check and clean out the front cylinder drain hole, make sure the front plug is dry, if it already is then your problem is likely to be the front carb, that'll need cleaning, also worth checking the choke plungers are working correctly.
As to the rear brake, it tends to collect cr*p, so give it a service, and make sure it operates correctly and the piston is greased up properly (red rubber grease).
Cheers Mark.

You sure its the brakes? Could be caused by too much oil, gets between the clutch plates or something.
Thanks guys. Yes seems to be the front cylinder as if you fiddle about with the plug lead it sometimes tends to settle the idle. Drain hole was cleaned. Will have a look at the spark plug on next off day. Will also try and get the brakes serviced. Not too comfortable fiddling about with brakes on my own,
Cheers

I've got a fair amount on at present, but if I remember right you're only about 500 yrds away around the corner from me (down to the vets, turn left couple of bikes parked outside), need some guidance and can catch me in, I don't mind taking a look.
Cheers Mark.
cheers Mark. whats your address.

Yeah nice to meet you to, sorry I didn't have more time, but at least we highlighted the issues and what to do next, get those bits and we can move on from there.
Cheers Mark.

So come on.....do tell...whats bits identified as faulty?
Sorry guys for the late reply. The plungers were ceased with dirt. The previous owner didnt seem to have cared too well for the bike as some of the bolts were ceased. Anyhow. we will be greasing the plungers and putting in new pads.
We were unable to get to the spark plug as we didnt have the original sv front spark plug spanner and time was short, however if im unable to get hold of a spanner we will have to remove the radiator etc, check the plugs and then move fwd. Good thing i have new plugs if need be. Will have to get a fender extender though.
Will keep updating when we make the changes.
Ok. Update. Big thanks to Mark, Jambo and Sid squid for all the great advice and help and caliper respectively. The caliper was well and truly *^$"ed. The pins and pistons were bonded to the caliper and couldnt be removed. I bought 2 sets of pins and r clips, 2 sets of seals for the pistons incl the dust seals. Mark showed me how to grease the seals, piston incl assemble, so we basically did a thorough service on the rear caliper incl fitting new pads and now I have a rear properly functioning brake setup which was previously non existent. Next on the list is a new clutch cable and servicing front calipers and new pads, sorting out the misfire, changing fork oil, springs and fuel tap and general service.
Also got a chance to attend a Soho meet and meet some great guys for a bit of idle banter. great night out. Thanks guys.
