View Full Version : Photo Diary of a 10 Year Old

It dawned on me that this year, my little SV is 10 years old. Ive had her since new and done alsorts - track days, touring, commutes to work, Sunday bimbles... the lot. Shes hardly ever put a foot wrong and considering shes not garaged or in a shed, she scrubs up not too shabby.

The bike is going to have a busy year this year and to help celebrate its 10th birthday, I thought Id keep a running photo diary of what we've both been up to. Sad I know, but I take enough photos and spend enough time at the computer to do it, so why not! The first posts are going to be what have already happened this year, just while I get up to date with the pics.

So, this was what greeted me when I pulled the cover off her in February:

I'll get some more pics up shortly with a few more close ups.

Straight away after a walk around the bike, I spot plenty that needs fixing and sorting.

Ten year old rubber hose on the rear brake. Surely that needs changing now.
http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s285/harrisonm65/SV650%202013/DSCF0074_zpscabb99de.jpg

Rusty banjos on the odd front hoses. These were given to me years back though, so cant complain.

Underseat infills needs replacing but Im fairly sure the battery does too first. I'll come to that later.

And on top of that lot, I have new bits to fit and she needs a bloody good clean! I best get to work then eh?

Good thread idea, and the bike looks great, I'm here to recommend sheds!
I got one last year an 8 by 6 for about £300, it was an ex demo from garden centre, I can get both the SV and CBR in it.
Also I can have the SV on both front and rear stands and still shut the door as I found out this weekend.

Cheers. That was the product of the last track day. That engine casing really lets the bike down. The other little niggles are all easy sorted but that case is a pig.

I would love a shed or a garage, but where I live, I have no garden or space to put one up. :( The Mrs has an weird shaped back yard too and if we put a shed up, it would block half of it off. We're hoping to move sooner rather than later so a garage is a definite must for the new place.

So, with a couple of days booked off work and the boys at www.bandcperformancetyres.co.uk kindly letting me use their ramp, tools and expertise, I thought I better fire the bike up and make sure it can actually get there. Turned the key, hit the button and..... nothing! Flat as a pancake. All those cold winter nights must have taken their toll on an ageing battery. I tried charging it up overnight but although it said it was OK, when I refitted it, all I got was a fast repeating clicking sound. Time to get a new battery.

Out with the old battery

Now with everything running nicely, I put everything back together ready to get to the garage, including those missing underseat infill panels I mentioned before.

Funny thread names not withstanding, we crack on....

So, last day of Feb 2013 and 1st March 2013 takes us to B & C Performance Tyres. They let me use their workshop while I carried out a bit of work. Bear in mind that I am a mechanial numpty. Apes have more spanner control than I do, so this was a big undertaking for me. I had lots of help from Barney and Lee at the shop but did 95% of the work myself. Quite proud of that actually. Anyway, heres how we got on.

On the ramp and ready to start

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s285/harrisonm65/SV650%202013/DSCF0105_zps6afd730d.jpg

Decided to start at the back end as thats where most of the work planned was to be carried out. Fairings off and back wheel out...

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s285/harrisonm65/SV650%202013/DSCF0107_zpsf02be7a4.jpg

... and this is what we see. Not ideal!

I bought a ZZR1400 shock and then took it to Kais Suspension for a service. The original shock is well, rubbish and only built for 8 stone midgets. Im "slightly bigger" than that, so needed something firmer. This fit the bill nicely.

Everything going well so far and Im feeling full of confidence at my new found socket set skills. Then I find this...

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s285/harrisonm65/SV650%202013/DSCF0118_zps6e0f3b64.jpg

... it looked like the joint on the pipe had corroded and was spraying a very fine mist of oil all over the place. Glad I found that before I was hurtling round the track. Better get that seen to sooner rather than later. I'll come back to that in a bit.

Anyway, with the rear end pretty much done, its time to start at the front.

I never got a fancy red ring when my 1000 shock was serviced by Kais earlier this year.

Bet your bottom yoke will be a nice shade of rusty brown. My SK3 was like that after just three winters. I also had to repaint my fork lowers before I sold her back in 2007.

So the sales pitch goes, the fancy red ring is a larger cap for the reservoir. Apparently, it sticks out, whereas the standard ones stick in. It makes for a slightly larger reservoir, so more oil, better cooling etc etc. Like I said, so the sales pitch, goes anyway. It went over my head a bit. Looks nice though!

The bottom yoke actually isnt too bad seeing as its out in all weathers. It does have a couple of spots of rust on but doesnt look half as bad as I was expecting. The fork lowers have the usual bit of pitting on, but again, for a bike thats lives outside and has done 27k miles, Ive seen worse.

With the rear end as complete as I can get it for now, I move to the front. There really wasnt much to to do here. Gave it a little bit of a clean up, checked, cleaned and regreased the brakes same as I did with the rear and fitted some new levers.

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s285/harrisonm65/SV650%202013/20130221_152403_zps1725e7d3.jpg

With that done, it was on to that leaking oil cooler pipe. A new pipe cost something like £72 which I thought was excessive to say the least. I managed to get a 2nd hand cooler and pipes from a K9 model that was in good nick for a good price. While all that was off, a new oil filter and oil went in too.

Dont even think about flaming me for that downpipe! I lost that battle years ago. Plus, all that cleaning there takes up too much riding time. :)

I didnt paint them personally, but yea, I had them done. I think it looks a lot better. The black infill breaks up the lines - unless your bike is black of course!

So, the 6th of April rolls along and I start to think about fitting the cameras for the upcoming trackdays. I already had a little bullet camera that used to be front mounted under the headlights, but I removed it and lent it to a friend of mine when he rode around the Pyrennese (sp). After that I bought a GoPro and ordered a wing mirror mount from MotoMount in the USA. Here are the results.

The 13th April comes around and with only 6 days to go until the first track day of the year, I think I better get the new brake lines on and bleed the brakes up with some new fluid. You remember that old original rubber rear hose right? Well, nice new Goodridge braided one is now fitted at the rear

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s285/harrisonm65/SV650%202013/20130413_140719_zps02af144f.jpg (http://s155.photobucket.com/user/harrisonm65/media/SV650%202013/20130413_140719_zps02af144f.jpg.html)

Also, the front brake lines were already braided, but the banjos on them were all rusty and looked a bit tatty to be honest. So, after getting some great condition 2nd hand ones from a fellow Orger, I got those fitted too.

Tyres look remarkably good actually. I'll have to get a shot of them. Ive not ridden since the trackday so will get a photo of them posted up soonish. There are some cheap days out there but now that summer is approaching the cost is going up. Luckily, this was a freebie really as I went as a guest of a dealer for a Michelin dealer only day. It was on the back of a Michelin Power Cup day so I just had to get a pair of Pilot Power 3s on. I needed new tyres anyway so it was a bit of a no brainer.

Thats the 2nd time Ive done Oulton now and Ive got it again in July. Also going round Cadwell for the first time in July. Quite looking forward to that. Was a bit disappointed with my performance at Oulton though. Wasnt aggressive enough, riding style was very "out for a Sunday pootle" etc. Still, 1st track day of the year and all that so at least now I know roughly the areas I need to improve.

OK, so not strictly a photo, but here is the video of one session from the Michelin day at Oulton Park. There would have been more but I made many a technical school boy error so this was the only session that had data, front and rear footage.

I used some old rubbish software to do the editing and it has ruined the quality from the GoPro camera that I used, so apologies for that. Im just seeing if I can lay my hands on something like Adobe Premier or Sony Vegas and then I will redo this footage plus all future recordings.

When Im back there in July, I need to be more aggressive!

Just had a reply from Focused and they use the times to sort out the groups on the day. However, once the day is over, they email you your lap times. They reckon you should have them within 48 hours of the day finishing. Sounds good enough for me.

Very much hoping to do it on the SV, but will depend on weather. Hoping to see if racing there in the minitwins next year, is a possibility or will my talent (or lack of) resign me to keep dreaming!

I'll be the one with a rusty trailer possibly hiding out the back if warmers aren't allowed for novices.

I like the idea of racing but Im lacking a few things. Money, time, talent, youth, fitness.... I could go on but I'll only depress myself!

Going off some of the trackdays Ive done, I think tyre warmers are compulsory. Or at least you'd think so going off some of the garages. Gone are the days of just rolling the bike out of the back of the van - everyone wants to be a professional race team. Sod that though, Im still the one with taped up lights and the number plate taken off! So, I'll probably be hiding at the back somewhere too, chilling out in the van while everyone else tinkers and spanners on their bikes.

I think the racing bit is just so I can say I've done it! Not interested in a full championship. Yeah I'm a chiller not a tinkerer. Get my soup on the stove and listen to the hum of my genny. Looking forward to it big time!

Wow, its been quite a while since I added to the diary for this year. Im struggling to remember what Ive been up to actually, besides track days. I'll get some videos and pictures of those up later. In the meantime, I had some new bar ends! I know you are all excited about this ha ha. I lost one on the way home from work one night - no idea how or where. I managed to cobble together a pair of original Suzuki ones which I prefer to the old Motrax ones I had.
