While looking through an extensive service history of a car I've put a deposit on, I found an Experian AutoCheck from 2010. It has a message from the DVLA/DVLNI saying "Car was used before first registration. Car used before being registered in the UK."

The year of first registration and year of manufacture are both 2004. So what does this mean? Is it anything to worry about?

When was the car produced and when was it registered?

Usually they have a month detailed for both as well

First registered 02-July-2004. But the year manufactured just says 2004

Never heard of that before. Used for what? It must be legal though, surely?

Well the person who HPI'd it obviously thought it was ok because they bought it.

My neighbour had one of them before he had a porsche cayenne v8 and then a bmw z4 m (same engine as the m3)

Said it was more fun than both of the latter as it could be taken to the limit and would have another any day :).

Although hes looking at nissan gtr for this summer... Oh dear

Might have been a showroom car or a test car (but they're normally plated and taxed) Speak to Renault UK and see if they can shed some light.

Sound legit TBH. Just thought they had to build a ton of them to match orders, might have sat at the importers a little while

Could have been a personal import from Europe.

I bought my car in Belgium from a Toyota dealer, new car, UK spec straight from the factory. Back then you could save a lot by buying in Belgium/Netherlands typically. If it was driven here on export plates it might well show as "used", I brought mine in by trailer so it was "new". I had to take it to the Vehicle Registration Office for them to see it before getting the reg docs/number etc.

Ok that makes sense embee. I phoned renault but they weren't any use.

It's not worrying me too much now. Just wasn't sure what it could be

Could have been a British forces tax free car.

Funny you should say that because I'm sure the first registered keeper is someone in an army base or something

Just checked and the first registered owner on the V5 is someone from Gamecock Barracks in Nuneaton. So can they use it as much as they want, then when they sell it they register it as new?

Yeh I'm looking forward to having some power. The guy that had it before me traded it for a scooby :)
