View Full Version : windows 7 or 8 for games pc
So for David s birthday were building a gamming pc.
But he is worried that windows 8 is unsutable.
But the only gen os i can find is 8.
Is it worth trying to find a 7??

Not sure about the question, but I am possibly looking to go back to a PC. Can I ask why Windows 8 would be unsuitable?
Some game forums suggest issues.
But 8 will have Direct x11.
But on hear we have some in the know.were Game forums are a bit hit and miss

I'm a gamer, not come across any issues with 8 as of yet.
Steam library with 50+ games all seem to be fine.

If you're building the PC, why not buy 7

It was easy to find 8 on the site were we orderd the components.
They didn't have 7 instock.
Im going to give the 8 a try ,Like hindle8907 (http://forums.sv650.org/member.php?u=10926) most of his stuff is Steam.
If its a royal pain we can allways wipe and reinstal :)
The OS is going on a 64 gig SSD so the music will be safe on the spin drive
I built myself a gaming pc last year, Win7 is far better, Win8 is so unstable and spends its life using up your RAM and annoying you, try:

I brought all my bits from them, their great.
Edit: Yes im a gamer, i have about 70+ games on steam and in total well over 200 games!

Windows 8 is faster than 7 and much less resource hungry when running but it is a royal pain in the butt to use as it was designed for tablets. So doing anything with a mouse is a bother. Multi tasking can only be done inside the desktop application as the apps are one at a time. My friend and i play L4D2 and he used the Skype app, every time he minimised the app he couldn't hear me or i hear him.

There's options you need to turn off, that you don't need when using an SSD,
Page file is one & I'm sure there's another, otherwise you'll find the space disappearing quickly on the SSD.
SSD is the way to go, although 64gb might be a bit small. I'm using a 40gb SSD, which is hovering around 10gb free space for most of the time.
But mines not a gaming PC.
I just have to watch it when I'm doing video editing using Nero, as it drops down to 2gb. Once Nero's shut down its back at 10gb.
So I'm think of moving the OS to a bigger SSD at some point.
Do your software installs on the spin drive & don't defrag the SSD

I have Dual SSD's in RAID 0, the boot speeds are even faster than win7.
My system takes longer to post that it does it boot.
I dont know what RAM issues your having but my system runs sweet as a nut on win8 as it did on 7.
win8 takes a bit to get used to but if you have dual monitors it makes life much more interesting and is easier to navigate.
I would up the SSD to 128GB if I were you, 64GB soon gets full with the OS and a few new games, although steam does now give the option to move to which drive you specify.
The only problem with SSD's is that if you write to them too often or put your computer to sleep you can (not always) kill the SSD very quickly. They are alot faster but they are best for things that aren't updated alot (E.g OS's) I would always use a Spin-drive for storing games etc. And the problem with Win8 and gaming is win8 lost some of the backward compatibility, and as some of the games i play are still only 2006 games, win8 has a fit about it so i went back to Win7. And tbh with the price of HDD today you may as well buy 2 1TB spin drives and Raid them. And have an OS SSD.

I think the articles you have been reading very old my friend as these issues are pritty much non existent in SSD controllers these days.
I'm a Network Administrator and work with SSD , SAS and SATA drives so I'm fairly update of the pros and cons.
Well my friend brought a 128GB SSD about 3 months ago and about 2 weeks ago it died completely, the bios couldn't find it anymore. Then brought a new one about 2 days later, last night died again. He only had his OS and BF3 on it and both times they have died, And the manufacturer has told him the SSD is faulty due to the controller (One was a OCZ and was one Intel)
Anyway, SSD's may be good but you will need to buy the newer (E.g the ones in the last 2-3 months) ones to get rid of the issues.
Any one miss the start button on Windows 8 ???

Free program called classic shell puts it back for you. Installed on all our Windows 8 and server 2012 machines.
Yes I did shell 8 too .
That and trying to get XFM s HD 7770 core edition to load its support cd(still not got past this so on the generic catalyst) have been the only bumps in the road .

Do you need more than the latest catalyst? I have always preferred to skip all the manufacturer extras - just the drivers and MSI Afterburner for overclocking.
looks ok on far cry and crysis on an HD telly .
any recommended Cpu coolers. its standard ones just a bit annoying.A8 core

None of this is actually true.
