How come, on the whole, welsh roads seem to be of a much better standard to english ones? Im not talking about twistyness and general rapidness (of which they cater for nicely) more the road surface. I didn't see a single pothole and the surface was smooth and even across the board.
On some of my random bimbling i managed to cross over to the english border and a few miles in i hit a series of MASSIVE potholes. Safe to say i turned back around and headed back into wales.

How come? Is this a sign of a higher road maintenance budget? Better road laying standards? Less traffic? Just wondering because the difference is remarkable. Even the tractor littered b roads weren't covered in **** like the english ones were.

As you can guess i had a stellar few days, aside from the death defying journey home.

they have some sort of special funding, from the EU i think

not 100% but i remember reading somewhere that they get a funding boost from something

Less traffic and more money spent on them since each county has less roads so more £ per mile.

Not sure if Wales gets EU funding, Cornwall certainly does.

Temp fix only, they fill the potholes with sheep **** and straw. It don't last long, but there's loads of it and it keeps the taffies employed.

Less people using the roads mean they don't get worn out as much. Same as when we went to Bodmin, fantastic roads and surface for the same reason.

I think it's to do with the grade they put down. coarse will cope with the weather better. highlands roads are rough (coarse) as hell but no potholes. downside is its not as grippy due the grain and of the mix. here in the city the roads are shocking very smooth when fresh. Then after a someone will dig it up and winter it falls to bits then patched so it never ends.

EU funding. Basically it's the money England put in to the EU that is not spent on funding Spanish festivals.

When the Welsh voted to control budgets in the 90's, they started at one end of Wales and rebuilt every road they had
