View Full Version : Just how much crap is on the roads?

I recently had new tyres fitted so thought I would chance it between showers to scrub them in. things don't always go as planned so I ended up riding through a couple of medium showers which gave the roads a good soaking. On the way home I ended up following traffic for about 10 miles so had spray to contend with, dirty visor OK but the bike was absolutely filthy,to the stage it was grey, not green. You could barely see the headlights.

Purpose of the post being to remind you to not just clean your visor but give your headlights a wipe so that you can be clearly seen

Seems to be lots of tractors/lorries spreading mud on the road too right now. Was out yesterday and the amount of times I had to back off due to patches of the stuff across the whole carriageway was unreal. As it's warmed up a bit all of the construction sites seem to have got going again and the recent rain has just transferred the surface of most sites onto the neighbouring roads. And then there is the disolving road surfaces leaving gravel all over the place...

Yep, the roads need a good drenching to get rid of all the salt that's been sprayed on them

GSR isnt coming out until we've had a deluge. I sort of thought we'd have one over the weekend but its not been enough to take that grey film off the road. GSR is too pretty to come out yet :)

Two days of heavy showers have cleaned the salt off the roads around here, so things are improving.

Ha Puny, mine looks pretty similar to yours after doing 90 miles on Saturday, and people tell me to clean mine, pah!!! The roads are just filthy atm, nowhere near enough rain had to wash it clean again. No way am I going to spend my precious time cleaning the thing for it to come back in a state every time I go out, too many farms about these parts. My SV's used to smelling like a burnt cowpat lol!

Still, at least the weather's a few degrees warmer at the minute, makes such a welcome difference to riding. I can actually feel my hands after travelling 10 miles :smt081

Wow!! 90 miles?
That's unreal!!!
Ride my bike? I'm not sure I'd even drive my old work truck in that mess!!!

I rode 120 miles yesterday and spent about 15 mins. wiping the scottoil off the rear wheel, cleaning a few bugs off the windscreen and repolishing the downpipe, sorted. ;)

Suprised the UK doesn't have laws similar to the US concerning carp on the roads.
In the US if nature washes/blows whatever into the road, the state will take care of it.
However if any of your property ends up in the road and it wasn't due to an act of nature, you are responsible for clean up and any damage / accident caused by it.

Bill, Most of that grey sludge you see is salt and sand mixed put down on the roads by "the state" during the recent bad weather[snow and ice] but unfortunately in certain parts of the country we have not had enough rain to wash it off the road surface. A shower, or showers of rain just isn't moving it, needs a proper deluge of rain to shift it.

Non bikers think your nuts when we get a good bit of heavy rain for a week and we say,"BRILLIANT!"

It's the spring clean.

Get into greenlaning. You'll soon:
A) Put that level of dirt into perspective.
B) Get in the habit of wiping your lights and indicators down at the end of a ride and every time you stop for fuel.
C) Get good at plausibly lying as to how your lights are spotless, but that you somehow overlooked cleaning your place. ;)
