Judging from first-hand accounts from bobbies/football supporters over the years, that's the tip of the iceberg. I've heard of people stubbing cigarettes out on horse's backsides and trying to break their legs with metal bars, just for a laugh really.

That's why I could never be a police officer - I lack the self-control not to beat people like this into a bloody pulp.

I've been in a stable with a friend's horse when it decided to be a bit pushy, and it takes more than a punch to get their attention. That police horse is a whole lot bigger than my friend's, so I don't imagine it was too bothered.

Self defense - I guess that was why he had a scarf wrapped around his face too - in case he was attacked by a nearby wasp.
