View Full Version : Which exhaust?

What are there? Wouldn't mind changing it for something smaller, better sound and to unleash any extra power that may (or may not) be there. Also how easy it it to change myself? It's a faired pointy SV650.
I know nothing about what exhaust would be best and how loud I could go without causing unwanted attention.
Also what other common mods are there for the SV650? Are there any must haves? Changed the tank pad yesterday for a proper one and looks much better.

If you're after a slip on I can recommend Delkevic. I have a carbon stubby which cost around £140 ish delivered. It is loud, but not ridiculously OTT. Failing that, MTC also do some nice stubby style exhausts (do a search on fleabay) for similar prices.
You won't get any extra power from a slip on (well maybe a couple of BHP if your lucky), but will certainly make your bike sound a whole lot better :)
In terms of fitting, as long as you're reasonably competent with a hacksaw and allen key / sockets, you shouldn't have any issues.

Could be mistaken but didn't someone say not to go carbon for the SV's? Can't understand why though

Some people say that the vtwin engine can crack a carbon can due to vibration, etc. Personally it's never bothered me and I've never seen any evidence to back it up. If it was such an issue then there wouldn't be so many carbon exhausts available for vtwin bikes.

Yeah that's what I thought.
Go for a Fuel, easy fit, sound sweet. Better than the standard rocket launcher.

I'd go for some mirror extenders they're one of the first things I got and give you a bit more vision in the rear view, more a safety thing but every little bit helps!!

Previous owner did this and they do help.
I had a scorpion and like it a lot. baffle out all the time, and wasn't too loud. First thing I would buy for an sv is................................a Fenda Extenda!!!! If you don't have one, buy one online now! I know all too well what the consequences are. Ask the GM lot!

I had a carbon oval remus Revolution on an 05 pointy for 5 years and about 40,000 miles. No cracking or other 'vibration' associated damage.
But the sound was loverley!
Just ordered a fuel micro mini brushed stainless exhaust. Excellent customer service, think it was £160 delivered with 10% off thanks to the Org!
They kindly allow 10% to Org members, the code is somewhere on the forum. You can either order online or call with the code.

I have a fender extender from pyramid ready to fit. Will be a bit awkward with the fairing in the way but should be easy enough
I have a Fuel exhaust (oval carbon-look midi) and would highly recommend it! As stated you get a 10% discount via the forum and they are really great people. Also, if you 'like' them on Facebook they do offers on there too, such as bike of the month and a new-liker type job.
I ride with the baffle in and it's plenty loud enough; heads turn if that's what you're after.
Very easy to fit and it is much better looking and sounding than the stock lump.

Excellent choice, i am fitting my extenda this week, well i say me, the garage are doing it as its in for a big service so getting them to fit it and new exhaust!
Hope you get a can sorted soon, they sound epic when the stock ones are off, even better before the new one is fitted. there was a vid someone posted of the engine with no can on it, somewhere on here!

How does the 10% off work?
There is a code to use at online checkout, it should be SV-OC-13. Use same code if you call and order :)

Don't suppose anyone has a photo of the midi can on an SV so I can see what it will look like?
Check out the fuel website, I didn't realise they actually have a gallery on there, you go in and can select your bike, think they have maxi, midi and poss mini but not the micro mini. That one is under half the length of the standard can.
By my estimation the micro mini ends just after where the standard can hanger is.
:)
Front fender extender has to be the #1 mod for the sv without a doubt ;D

Sounds about right haha, can't remember! It's knocking about on here somewhere.

I'll try to put a photo on of my bike so you can see how it looks.
Found a couple of good pics, tried several times to upload them but I have no idea. Sorry!

If you have Photobucket upload to there then post the link here. That's easiest

most slip on cans require you to cut the exhaust at some point along it, which you then slip over a slightly wider piece of pipe which tightens up to clamp around the part slipped over the original pipe. I got a beowulf slip on from ebay for £50. Sold a blue arrow slip on can as well for £60. other mods worth having:
- crash bungs (fairing, fork, rear swing arm), if you ever have a drop whether it standing still or moving will save alot of the damages to the bike. Very important if you have lower fairings on the pointy as they expensive to replace.
- stomp grips of some sort. Cost from £30-60 depending on make. They are sticky pads that gone on both sides of the tank where your legs rests against it to offer grip between you and the tank. Very useful mod when riding. There are various types all do the same thing, Just be aware they can leave wear marks on trousers over time.
- tail tidy, makes the number plate holder small making the bike look more sporty around £50-100, check ebay there are some cheap good ones there, and for sale area.
- solo seat cowl, makes bike look sporty again, no real use. Can be annoying if you carry alot as you might scratch paint on it then a normal seat would be better.
- bigger screen, helps with motorway winds, tinted ones just look cool. Price vary alot depending where you buy from.
- front mudguard (fender extender), this will save down pipes and radiator. I added an additional piece of rubber to the bottom of mine to extend protection.
- THE MOST IMPORTANT MOD out of them all RIM TAPE. With out rim tape your bike is worthless. Costs £5, sticks around your wheel, depending on the colour it will reflect light at night and your bike will be awesome.
- undertray, They are a headache to fit, they cost £100+. They just give you a colour match to the under the back wheel makes it look nicer. But fitting requires you to cut the orginal black one underneath a little bit. So it is a perminate mod.

Second image, solo seat cowl, undertray (white bit underneath), tail tidy (this one is specific for a undertray) but R&G ones look the same. SLIP ON can. RIM TAPE VERY IMPORTANT MOD GET IT

third image, this is where I cut my exhaust for a slip on can (look at where the little hole is) I started it up with out a can on and its pretty noisey. Took me an hour to cut. I am small and skinny which is probably why

If you want the feeling of more poke from your SV change the gearing, I did it by putting a 46 tooth sprocket on the back it really needs an extra link in the chain because if you don't it draws the back wheel in quite a bit, I only changed the chain to the longer one when I needed to replace it...
There are tons of mods for the SV you could spend the rest of your life modding the bike. I wouldn't go out looking for extra power though, what you want is better handling, and if your willing to spend a little cash on suspension upgrades you certainly won't regret it.
For fitting the fender extender, just remove the front mudguard there's only four bolts holding it on its a really simple job after that.

would have to totally agree. So many mods out there, at what point is spending too much on a budget bike?
as far as looking for power goes, anything that improves performance goes on your insurance, if you not got many NCB the performance mods will be expensive when insuring, All mods I mentioned are style and protection and not performance enhancing.
You want performance buy a better bike, (sorry sv650 orgers but its the truth!!!)

Hi, i have previously had an sv with a carbon viper can on it and the carbon body failed due to the strong pulses of exhaust gasses (vipers words), saying that they did replace it and the second one held up fine. personally id say either go with stainless for cost, or titanium if you want weight saving/performance and money is not an issue. but delkevic would be my recommended choice followed by beowulf.

This is what I have to consider. If I can make it sound and handle better then fine but any extra power it's probably easier to buy another bike. I have the same attitude when it comes to cars. Buy what will do it in the first place. I bought the SV to learn with. It's certainly quick enough but not scary quick by any means. My next stop may be suspension and tyres once the tyres wear out once I learn a bit more and then I can appreciate the difference. Was the same on my road bike. Bought it with cheap rubber to get used to the bike then when I switched to Continental's it transformed the bike. What tyres are people running and is there any benefit of going for a wider tyre?
Good shout, exhaust for me is classified under "sensible" upgrades as if they don't see me they might hear me.
Tyre wise I run Avon storm 2 ultras or storm ultra 2's either way. I found them magical compared to the standard tyre. They aren't dual compound but the compensate by being much thicker in the middle to account for the "touring" aspect if the sport touring bike. I find them sticky enough for my riding, I'm not a seriously quick rider nor do I take it any where near what the tyre am bike can handle round a bend. Good wet grip too although I only do my commute in the wet i don't take much longer than when it's dry.

Well if its only noise your after i would say get a stainless can, it will last longer and some even have up to a five year warranty where as I've only seen 2 at most with a carbon one.
Tyres is really a personal thing, it depends on your style of riding, the weather you usually ride in, how quickly you want the tyres to heat up, right down to how many miles you want them to last.
In my opinion i like the dunlop sportmax qualifier but that's just me, they are not cheap but i don't recommend anyone try and scrimp on tyres as they have to deal with a lot of physical forces and strains and you really them to stay gripping or your in trouble. im pretty sure you can't put any wider tyres than standard spec but i may be wrong??

I been using avon storms since owning my bike at 3000 miles. IT now has over 38k and I have taken a chance with going for michelin road pilot 3. Got them on my cbr and done 5k on them and cant complain. they handle well in the wet and have dual compound. i also get good milage from it.
I burn rear avon strom tyre in 5k and i just dont see whats special about them.

All end cans are the same, buy the one that suits your pocket/is sold near your house/you like the sticker on.
The same diverse preferences come out every last one of the many many times this question has been asked.

Of what I've seen there's hardly any performance gains from any can so is probably best to go for a cheaper one rather than something several hundred quid more.
Woohoo! Got my bike back with new fuel micro mini exhaust, as the sun has graced us with its presence today I will take a pic and upload it so you can see what it looks like size wise

Hi pyro, it looks pretty sexy. when you say "loud as fook" is it obnoxiously loud as i'm quite tempted by this can?
Craig
Erm, I would say no but that's my personal opinion. It's certainly a lot louder and nice with the baffle in. It's at least 100db measured on my iPad at idle. Not sure exactly as that is as high as the meter I have goes
BikerCraig
27-04-13, 03:29 PM
As long as its not silly loud :), I'm torn between this can and a delkevic tri-oval (in fitting with the pointy's triangular lines) but this is cheaper so its swaying me towards it. Can i ask how much fuel charged for it to be posted to you?
Cheers Craig
I ha a beowolf tri-oval on my old sv, was nice looking but till quite long which is why I went with this as its only 225mm.
It was about £150ish delivered to my dealership who fitted it.
I called them to order it and gave them the discount code for the 10% off (the 10% doesn't apply to the normal stainless as they are on sale at the moment).
BikerCraig
27-04-13, 03:37 PM
Yer this is quite a lot shorter, the del tri-oval is 320mm which is still pretty stubby in my opinion but this is a midget and just looks mint.
Ahh no discount for me then as i'm after a plain stainless can, maybe i'll just try being extra polite to them :p
Craig
To be honest with the 10% the brushed is just about the same price as the normal stainless so that how I justified it lol!
And yes that was the length of the beowolf I had and just a smidge more than the mini fuel sell, but I wanted proper short for this lol it looks very tidy and not out of place, I was concerned the round would look odd as was toying with the idea of a normal oval but well chuffed with the choice!
BikerCraig
27-04-13, 03:47 PM
looking at the fuel site the brushed is listed as cheaper than the SS. I think you were right with the oval, the round suits curvy sv's but to me it looks a bit out of place on a pointy. I quite like the look of the carbon fibre look can as my sv is black with silver frame so looks wise it would work, might see if i can get the discount on that one.
Craig

27-04-13, 03:48 PM
sorry divvy moment, was looking at brushed round not brushed oval lol
Craig
Lmao!!!!! They have updated the site now as the micro mini was only listed on the brushed.
The weather has turned now so if it brightens up again or tomorrow ill get a close up and you can see (hopefully) how the brushed looks properly
BikerCraig
27-04-13, 04:02 PM
Well having looked at the cost of the carbon look micro mini with the discount code i think i'm decided on that one, it says that the micro mini doen't come with a fuel label/emblem on it but i see yours does???
That's cool, if you get a chance could you possibly do a short clip of the bike running with the new can?
The orgers will love it ;)
Cheers Craig
Yeah I thought that too! But the guy at the garage said the mechanic stuck it on! I don't know as I didn't see it before fitting and when I picked up the bike the fitter had gone on break so couldn't ask!
I will get a vid of it running when I am out next so I can take it through the whole range, neighbours won't appreciate that haha! Can you only add YouTube vids to the forum?
BikerCraig
27-04-13, 04:26 PM
So it must have come with one supplied then, maybe fuel send it with it but not already on the can???
I might drop them an email on monday to see if this is the case.
I'm afraid i don't have a clue as i've not uploaded video's myself... I cant see why it would only be youtube vids i'm just not sure if there is a different way of doing it as youtube ones you can just copy the vids url and paste it straight into the message box, press go, and BOOM!
Craig
Yeah I can't remember my YouTube account details though lol
BikerCraig
27-04-13, 04:42 PM
ahh i see your problem, i'd drop one of the forum admin staff a message to see if there is another way of uploading a vid. they will most likely be able to let you know how you can get around the youtube issue.
