View Full Version : Am I missing an exhaust clamp?

Evening guys

I noticed earlier that there is no clamp on the join between my header pipe and the centre section of my exhaust, just a rusty area where it looks like there may once have been one. I pulled away a very small piece of rusty metal that was still attached (barely) - you can see where it was attached in enclosed photo. It doesn't seem to be leaking, but should there be a clamp there? Been like that since I've had the bike and I was going to touch up the rusty area with some high temp silver paint, but now I'm thinking should I put a clamp on there?

Yes, but its probably held together by corrosion :p

Ha, you are probably right :p

Is it worth putting one on there or leaving well alone?

Yeh should be a clamp. And polish, don't paint ;)

Looks like something I need to add to my list of things to do then. God knows why it's missing  Any ideas which size I would need and whether I can put it on without separating the pipes? ( I know they screw together to tighten but not sure if they can be fitted over a joined pipe).

Looks like I need the exhaust repair kit with gaskets. Will probably put it off for a while as long as it doesn't start leaking

If it doesnt leak or just slightly just put the clamp over and tighten it up to seal. Thats what its for and for a fiver cheaper than trying to fit new gaskets.

Yes! They seem to rot away to nothing there.
Its around 44mm IIRC. I used a little bit of exhaust putty just to make sure

Cool. Do you know if the clamps come apart so I can get it on the pipe without dismantling anything?

Tell me about it! All that was left of the clamp was a tiny rusted piece where it was welded to the pipe :(

Just found a Mikalor one on ebay. They seem to be 'flip front' so you dont need to remove the pipes :)

Don't even bother with the clamp, it won't make any difference now that the exhaust is set in place. Don't damage your wallet.

Explain how this isnt necessary where it is recommended, Is part of the design, and connects two metal tubes together on a machine that flexes through use and helps contain toxic gases before it is released behind the rider?

It is needed, makes the motor run leaner. Replaced both header clamps and it make the bike run better than with two scabby ones

Thanks for the replies guys. So it seems like common consensus that the original Suzuki clamp is made of cheese

Will get a clamp for it as looks like some exhaust time is needed anyway as my slip on is not sealed properly either (when I look down it I can see specs of daylight!) Looks like my local friendly mechanic didn't use any exhaust paste when he fitted it. To be fair it's so loud you wouldn't hear it blowing anyway. Still, what is it they say, 'if you want a job done properly' and all that...

He can change it if he wants, but in reality it isn't going to make much difference. You can say, "It made a big difference to me!" etcetc but it's really just a phycological thing.
You would need the clamp originally yes and a bit of exhaust sealant of course, but once it's expanded/contracted so that the pipes are welded together solid it really isn't going to make much difference. Having a dent in your exhaust or no baffle would make the bike run far leaner.

The pipes aren't welded together, as i said it's part of the design & for the sake of a fiver, really a no brainer. What kind of bodge is it that puts 2 parts of an exhaust together & relies on the 'paste' to hold it together?

It's your choice but it wouldnt be mine.

My Mikalor 43-47mm clamp arrived today. Does seem very good quality :)

Am I right in assuming I replace my other clamps with these too (are they the same size?) The screws on my Delkevic ones must be mild steel as are rusting already

maviczap

It'd be a good idea to replace the crappy ones

Exhaust link pipe might be up to 52mm, so check for size first
