Hello

Just after abit of advice of identifying what this is?
After sliding the "axle?" out from between the forks, this was connected inside the left side.

(Excuse the amazing tea towels covering the calliper :p)

I'm guessing its something like speed sensor?
Either way, inside the housing is what I can only describe as a hardened plastic cyclinder, which can be removed. ( A spacer?)
Parts of this fell off when I removed the wheel, but as you can see it's wrecked :(

How important is this piece and can I continue to reattached my wheel once I've got a new tyre although this part is damaged?

Had a feeling it was, cheers Redmist & Andrew :D
Ideally need to have my bike back on two wheel by tomorrow, is the plastic spacer thingy something Suzuki would have in stock?

Be a couple of days, normally in UK
You can run it without a speedo, mine did for about a month

I have also glued the useless plastic magnet back together with epoxy and ran it like that for a while until I could get a new one.

You would have thought that by now some one would have realised what a pile of rubbish these bits are and made a good one to replace it with! ;-)

Just remember that the main reason that these get broken is due to the failure to align it correctly with the recesses in the wheel that drive it, then when the axle is tightened it just crushes it.

New Pilot Roads fitted
Brake callipers and pads cleaned
But without the speed sensor rotor (Or 100% of one) no speedo :(
Thanks everyone for helping identifying the part.
£22 and a 2 day wait now ensues [-o<

Just FYI, so long as you've got at least one tang left on there then they run and work fine. All the teeth do is spin the rotor around.

Cheers Chris,
But out of the 4 teeth I have 1/4 of one.
Someone did a really good job of destroying it, I'm almost glad I found it now rather than it go faulty later.

If it doesn't spin... no speedo. But no other issues really.

Usually caused by tyre fitters not lining the tangs up properly on reinstallation.

Hi, new to these forums, bought a SV650S 2004 yesterday and the speedo was working fine all the way until i got home now it is showing 0 MPH all the time, looks as its had new tyres on it recently could this also be my problem and how hard is it to source this part?

Well i have to take the wheel off the bike tonight, What exactly am i looking for? A plastic piece with 4 notches around it?

Yeah, a little brown bakelite cylinder with 4 tangs stuck up out of it. Or more likely a little brown bakelite cylinder and a load of broken shrapnel in there!

Repaired mine on Tuesday :D

While looking at the bike from the front, on the right hand side follow the fork down and you'll see a cable feeding a black rounded unit on the inside of the wheel.

This is the Speedo sensor, when you pull the wheel spinal out it separates from the wheel.

Inside the housing of the sensor is a small cylinder with 4 prongs
(unless it's naff :D ), this part separates from the housing.
This piece is called the "speedo sensor rotor", it's a magnet and the prongs line up with similar indents inside the wheel.

Hardest part is propping up the front wheel, otherwise it's a simple swap.
Got mine through Suzuki, 24 hour delivery for £20.
Judging by the broken rotor that crumbled out of my speedo sensor, unofficial types are available. But comparing old to new, the Offical Suzuki part was of a higher quality and had a snug fit inside the sensor.

Old (No surprise why it's wasn't working)

Judging by the broken rotor that crumbled out of my speedo sensor, unofficial types are available.
I rather doubt that, I suspect the more recent parts are not of completely identical design, they are of course dimensionally similar, and made of a similar material.
But comparing old to new, the Offical Suzuki part was of a higher quality and had a snug fit inside the sensor.
As it's made of a relatively soft material, once it's damaged I'm sure the remains get a battering as the fragments swirl around in there.

Cheers for the correction Sid.
More reason to be careful when taking the front wheel off in future.

It's putting it back on that does it
