Yes. Buy the pad & change it yourself.

but as they pulled the rear wheel out the old pads just crumbled and fell out so they said they have to fit them now, tyre and pads is costing me £181 inc vat :(

They don't have to do anything you don't want them to. Tell them to feck orff it doesn't take 5 mins

They can't stop you taking the bike either

Well its obviously more convenient for them to fit. But you can carefully use just the front until you get replacement pads. If the question is about cost then, having now done this a few times, I'd do it myself as its relatively easy.

I won't give my very cynical opinion of some problems garages "suddenly" find to bump up the price.

I would say that if the pads have got to a point where they're illegal or dangerous the garage has an obligation to inform and strongly suggest they rectify the issue.

A decent set of pads for the rear might retail at a little over £20.

The effort to fit them, including cleaning up the piston, checking caliper condition and fluid level could easily take 15-30 minutes or so, most garages charge in 30 minute increments.

I'd say the price is about what I'd expect to pay in the circumstances. But those above are correct, you don't have to pay them, you can do the work yourself, or take it to somewhere else to have the work done.

If it is not possible to reassemble the machine and hand it back to the owner in a safe condition what were they supposed to do? Keep quiet? The shop did the right thing.

If you don't like the price, that's another matter entirely. What's to be expected other than them telling you the machine is unusable without new pads and offer them to you?

the annoying thing isn't so much the price but the fact they didn't tell me about the pads, i called them to see what time and then asked if everything was fine and they were like oh your pads are fu*ked, why couldn't they just call and tell me

It sounds like they've done it then! Legally you don't have to pay it but they're entitled to remove it. Yes they should have told you first.
