Using a front paddock stand?

This is my first bie so I dont have any pit stand experience...

I bought a rear and its great so I got a front also thats apparently universal however I cant see a way that it will lift the front securely at all

What am i doing wrong?

however my forks just slide through the 2 prongs and doesnt lift the front wheel high enough?

Look at the pic. One prong goes under the fork, the other one goes at the back. They are rubbish and unstable and require a lot of care once the front wheel is actually removed. I use mine now and then and parp from start to finish. Really you want some bobbins and a proper width fork style lift, otherwise its making do.

Get a head stock stand. Much better and will not fall off this when working on the bike.

By the sound of it you have a simple one that goes under the bottom of the forks

They're fine, I use one lots as it fits all manner of bikes, irrespective of what fittings there are. As said above, the front peg goes under the fork and takes the weight of the bike, the other goes behind to hold the fork on the front peg.
You'll notice that the pivot is a large triangle, this is a weight. Gravity makes the pegs drop into the right place to lift the bike, if it's been assembled the wrong way around - common - the pegs won't be easy to get into place.

The front stand cannot ever provide stability - that's the function of the rear stand. These stands are perfectly stable - when used correctly.

I'm going to take a look at mine tonight and see if it's more stable with the triangley bits swapped around. I think mine are identical but it's possible they're different and I've been plebbing it all this time. I think it's also highly likely that some are better than others and you Mr Squid have a decent one, and I Mr Cheapsake, have an incredibly pants one.

+1. All the benefits of a front paddock stand with the added bonus of enabling removal of the front forks.

Looking at that pic I had my bike on mine for the best part of 2 weeks the wrong way while the wheels were getting powder coated!!!! Thought it was a bad design as the way I had the triangular bits wouldn't allow for the removal of the front wheel spindle.

Anyway it worked so no harm done, I'll know for next time lol.

That's the one I got, & they may be foreigners, but are good to deal with.

some are better than others
This is unquestionably true, mine has adjustment for unequal length forks and is nicely made, but I have seen some less sturdy ones, also I've seen plenty that aren't put together and/or used properly.

I had a look last night and my twiddly triangley prongy things aren't identical, so I've swapped them round in case they were out in the wrong way round at the factory. Maybe I've just been using a dodgy setup all this time.

Front paddock stands don't even work on my z1000 as the fork legs are too wide where the pinch bolt goes through
