View Full Version : No thread insert in my bars for a bar end?
Righty so ive just recieved some r+g bar end sliders for my suzuki gsxr srad 600 1999. The bike has non standard clipons already http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Apex-48mm-Standard-Motorcycle-Clip-on-Set-/111068658284?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19dc353a6c

I knew the clipons didnt have any insert to thread a bar end onto, but i thought the r+g ones would come with that. Alas, they dont and it doesnt look like apex do an insert. So im thinking ill either have to buy a cheap bar end set and use the insert or just get some sort of circular bit of rubber and put that in, or get some metal tapers like these pushbike bar ends use http://www.wheelies.co.uk/p62869/RSP-Alloy-Bar-End-Plugs.aspx
Anyone got any ideas where i could get either of the last 2?

you can use the rubber ones from cheap bar ends and they'll work, but the motorbike equivalent to those you linked to are about twice as long and work better.
Like these (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BAR-INSERT-18MM-FOR-POLISPORT-INTEGRAL-HANDGUARDS-/190495541329?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts_13&hash=item2c5a6b4851)
Hmm yer that should work but its for 18mm inners, im trying a bit of diy with some rubber desk feet i found, seeing if they work..

whilst I've been advocating the "cheaper option" for years, sometimes the time and effort isn't worth it.

Yeah thats what i need, but loathe to spend £5 when i know i can pick up those bits of rubber for peanuts. Any idea on where would do them? Not sure if its the sort of thing i can find in b+q

Ive recently bought some R&G bar ends for a set of renthals im fitting to my bike and they came with an expanding insert, if you contact R&G with your internal diameter they should be able to tell you if they have a set of universal ends that will fit

Ok sorry,
Good luck anyway, im sure there is a way of adapting something
No worries something shall be bodged...
can you nick the ones from the CB when it comes time to trade up?
Already tried that haha but they seem quite stuck in there. Need to give em another tug...
D'oh!
You know what the standard size is for pointy bars? As i have the original bar ends from that with the rubber bits...
It should be 18mm, that seems to be standard oem diameter. Mine are wierd 19mm because theyre american.
hmmm, may not fit then. Welcome to give em a try at some point if you wish. Maybe next time we meet up with the GM rabble
Cool cheers for that, will try and make something out of the garage but if not ill ask before the next meet you go to. Or the AR?
Yes mate, no worries they are just sat in a cupboard at the mo. :)
Hopefully managed to sort it with lots of rubber bungs found in the garage..

When I fitted hand guards to my old 50cc endure bike we used metal Rawl plugs to hold them on, worked fine and didn't come loose even after a few off road spills. Bit of a bodge but it certainly worked!

I'm going to buy a set of these as I have lost one of the bar inserts. Newbie question..how do you fit these to your bars to then bolt the bar end onto?
+1 for B&Q dry wall expanding raw plugs. Always used them and £2 for a pack of 6 with the long bolts

I had a similar problem a few years ago. I wanted to mount my bar end mirrors onto s/s bar ends but the Paolo Tarrazo clip ons had no thread.
I used chemical metal pushed into the end of the bar with a suitable sized nut embedded in it. It's still not come loose And that must be over 5 yrs ago.

You don't, you assemble the whole bar end and rubber then fit it to the handlebar.
Disassemble the new parts, put the screw into the bar end weight including spacer/s and washer/s if your original has them, refit the rubber and nut then fit the whole assembly into the end of the handlebar.
Tightening the screw squishes the rubber endwise, making it expand sideways and grip the inside of the bar, you will note that the whole business is not actually fixed into the bar but grips it - do not remove the screw to remove the bar end - if you do the rubber will still be in the bar and the screw will fall off the inner side of the rubber, meaning there's nothing to fit the screw into and making the whole lot a git to remove.

Which of course makes the whole exercise a complete waste of time!! Unless of course you have the foresight to stop the nut coming off!!
See my previous thread {sigh}

It's a simple thing - no hard thinking required.
If you buy that kit on ebay just shove the existing rubber further inside the handlebar, so it plays no part in the fitting.
