Following Heathkangas thread on what bikes you've owned, what was the most robust you've had over the years?

ie low maintenance, easy fixings, cheapest running costs, survived drops and crashes, etc.

Mine would have to be my ol' GSF 400 grey import. Cost me a grand with 16000 on the clock and only spend approx £300 over the time that I owned her. Only died after a dodgy garage changed the tyre and put the wheel back on with the chain to tight, which tore the front sprocket to s**t after scrubbing the tyres in, which in turn snapped the chain, which wrapped around the busted sprocket, which blew the engine casing, water pump, engine block and my ****!!!! (happened during an overtake on the A605)

Honda XR650R. Owned it since 2002. Rallied it for five years, did three seasons of the National winter Supermoto championship on it and have done endless miles both on and off road. Engine has never been apart and I've never replaced anything mechanical (not even the clutch) and despite crashing it quite literally dozens of times (including one 80mph off at Donnington) I've only ever bent one set of handlebars and one clutch lever. Still on the original plastics as well although they are looking quite second hand now.....

If that doesn't count because it a "competition bike" then how about my 600 Hornet. Had it 13 years, it's just rolled 50k and I've only ever changed the oil, pads, chain/sprockets and tyres. I remember asking the Honda dealer if I should check the valve clearances at 16k like the book said and they said not to bother until it started to idle unevenly. I'm still waiting! I really ought to change the plugs some time as well......

It's between these three:

1985 Suzuki GSX550ES, 140,000 miles and didn't stop once, a couple of small problems and loads of consumables, but it never failed to complete a journey. Adjusted the valves many times obviously but other than that when I sold it the motor had never been opened - original camchain and clutch.
1998 Kawasaki ZX6-R, 124,000 miles and counting, a couple of small problems and loads of consumables, but it has never failed to complete a journey. Adjusted the valves obviously but otherwise the motor has never been opened - original camchain and clutch.
1999 Suzuki SV650S, 106,000 road miles and now a track bike. This poor thing has been used and abused for twelve years on the road, and is now enjoying its retirement out to pasture at race tracks various.

I'll see if I can find some pics.

Yes i really did own and ride this little beauty that happily transported me 60+ miles a day five days a week in all weathers for over a year before it got 'stored' against my garden wall while i moved up in bike sizes but when all the others let me down i one way or another i would go back to Ethel and it ran without a problem even after 12 months+ of resting against the garden wall unused and unloved it never failed to run :D
I had a real soft spot for that little scoot and would have still had it now had it not been stolen from my garden :(
