View Full Version : Bike not starting, just making dreaded click,

It's my first post and I've exhausted my search for a solution to this! She's an 06.

She was running and starting fine until I went on holidays for a week. When I got back she kinda tried to turn over but took four or five turns on one push of button. Ran her for a week with symptom slowly getting worse, same deal, not springing to life. Last Friday got to work but from office she wouldn't start, engine turning but not ignition. Finally after three/four goes she started, drove home... stopped her... then tried ignition and not a dicky, just the dreaded click from her tail. not even an turn of the engine!!?!?

What's really strange is that every now and then (sometimes when I rock her in gear) she tries to turn over but then I stop ignition and it's back to "click click" from tail.

So I've tried...

Cleaned the spark plugs (they were fine)
Charged battery via Oximiser (getting 12.9 volts)
Hooked up a standalone jump-starter (no joy, so cant be battery)
Tried bump starting her, she turned but I dropped the clutch too quickly and she cut. So have my suspicions it's a sensor (probably a "safety feature")
Oh and btw, kill switch is off, stand is up, it's in neutral, have tried all obvious stooopid permutations ;)

SO to cut what is getting to be a long story short, I've had enough.... Can anybody give me advise as to what else it could be and what I could try.... my next step is to bring to mechanic and get him to fix then sell it... but I do love the SV!!!

Thanks in advance!

May not affect it but have you checked for loose wires around the igntion? Just check what you can see as it sounds electrical to my very untrained ears

Thanks stuR, I did have a look but will have a good root around tomorrow. Cheers.

I've had problems like that on cars. But most of the time it was a did battery but as you've said you tried a jump starter. Have you checked the earth wires? Found that to be the problem after I replaced a bmw engine.

Get a multimeter on the battery to see if it's holding a charge. Check the Fuses.

I'm assuming it doesn't say CHECK on the Clocks when this happens?

If it does, check the wires and connector to the clutch lever microswitch and the wires and connectors for the side stand switch.

Why has no body said to check the regulator/rectifier? No point charging the battery if it isn't charging while the bike is running, the bike will eventually bleed it dry which is what it sounds like it is doing

Get a multimeter and test the battery with the bike running you should get a reading of around 14v at the battery when running. If not then it isn't charging and will eventually die again.

Check out this guide, it's quite good and simple to follow: http://www.electrosport.com/media/pdf/fault-finding-diagram.pdf

Thanks lads, the battery is solid, it's holding a charge. The fuses are all good too. There's no check on the clocks either!!

The 'good' news is that I started her on a bump tonight! Was nice to hear that familiar sound!! I'm gonna bring her to mechanic tomorrow and get it sorted. I'll let you know hw I get on.

Thanks for the input. That's a very handy guide daveyrach, very much appreciated.

When this happens on a car, it's usually a problem with the solenoid on the starter motor not engaging properly.

THe mechanic has made his assessment and it would seem it's the starter (good call Heorot)!!!

The really annoying thing is that, I bump started her (down private lane) and just as she started she just slighty got away from me, enough to dip to the left.... bloody broke off the gear shifter clean off... agggh!!! As you can guess much swearing occurred!!

Oh well, the saga continues :D

Glad to hear the problem may be solved.
Now where's the pictures ?

Thanks lads for the input. Turns out it was the starter motor, saw the old one and a chunk had come away from the rotor. Hence her trying to start every now and again, the chunk moved about!! Mechanic fitted a secondhand one and sorted a few other things on her (including the upgrade to gear peg) for 170 euro... shrug of shoulders!!

All in all she seems a much happier camper!!

Below are pics, I fitted the tail tidy, Powerbronze belly pan and mudguard extension myself. Was gonna change indicators but will probably leave her alone for a while :)

Glad to have her back!

Thanks again.
