So, you may or may not know i broke down the other weekend after a long ride and it was gearbox clutch trouble. Took the engine out and sent it away.

These are the pics i got sent today...

I fixed one of those for a forum member a while ago - by replacing the engine.

There was swarf everywhere, the crank, big ends and cam carriers were scored - it had been spraying very fine particles all over the place for quite a while before the problem became apparent.

That is a bit of a bugger isn't it.

Guess it'll be a while before you have us over your way for a rideout then?

Realistically, what causes this type of failure? Or is it just one of those things?

A mate of mine just dropped a valve on her ZX10R, and I think it's about the same year as yours. Lunched number three piston but I think the rest of the engine is OK. Perhaps you need to get together?

Cheers guys. spent half an hour on the phone to Kawasaki yesterday and they didn't seem to fussed/interested if i'm honest. Can't say i blame them. I'm not the first owner and can't prove or say how the bike was ridden before me etc etc.

RH you have a pm. :)

Manufacturing flaw, IMO.

Manufacturing flaw, IMO.

yep, thats what i was pushing for with the kwak rep but he was having none of it. Asked him if he wanted the bits to get a metalurgist to have a look but he made it clear that would never really happen.

It's also possible from the blueing on the shift fork that excess lash in that allowed it to try and be in 2 gears at once with the obvious result.
That sort of thing could be caused by problems with drum or external shift mechanism.

Either way when these things let go they go with a right f***ing bang. You don't know where those bits went, especially if it locked the back wheel at any point you want to at very least get the shafts up on blocks and clock them up. Check with the factory specs and if they're not bang on then don't even bother.

If you put it together with shafts bent even couple of tenths then box will bind up and will explode again very quickly.

as others have mentioned Chris, i'm more than a little dubious about just replacing a few cogs and putting it all back together and crossing my fingers.

The back wheel didn't lock (that i felt) it just jumped out of gear, luckily it didn't as i was going 'enthusiastically' down the 62.
