Not sure of the price but it is the future of gaming

It needs to connect to the internet every 24hrs...
It needs you to install every game to your HDD, and activate it online...
It locks games to your account only so you can't sell/buy 2nd hand ones without paying a fee or waiting 30 days if you make them a MS Live friend...
It needs to have Kinect connected at all times...
It aims to be an broader "entertainment device" and not a high end games console...
It will be 30%+ more expensive in Europe than in the States...
Doesn't sound much like the future to me
I'll be keeping my 360 for now...
the new slimmer 360 and 100+ new games looks like there may be some longevity in the old console for now
It's a lot of money but I'll probably end up buying one no doubt.
pc graphics are a match for it.
Steams cheaper for games .
so my GOW 360 will still have pride of place in the lounge

It's a bloody stupid console. If Sony allow backward compatibility, continue their version of live and keep it free, allow the 2nd hand games market and make their price cheaper than the Xbox, the Xbox One will be an utter flop.

Best summation yet
(and it comes direct from Microsoft)
KbWgUO-Rqcw (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbWgUO-Rqcw)
Seen the presentations for both the X box and Playstation.
The home media centre thing seems less relevant than in the previous generation as nowadays everyone has a laptop they can connect to their TV.
The graphics all look pretty but no real jump forward and the games don't seem to be very original.
Maybe it's my old age.
Just heard on news that ps4 will be £80 cheaper and won't have restrictions on
second hand games...
kapowww at £349 , (£80 cheaper) and no drm ( ie 2nd hand games) take that Microsoft.

Did they get an intern to design the two consoles? I know its an x86 pc inside ;) but making it look like a PC isnt really going to win any awards.

Yeah its more of a centrepiece for the living room than an actual full on game console. Not all that fused on the idea of it at the moment and that price is shocking then the fact looks like next gen games for both consoles is going to be around the 55 mark, will still get one though, it'll be worth the money just to have a quite console again sitting with the 360 for an hour is worse the same on the bike for the ears.

I don't think I'll be getting another xbox. I mostly play pc games now. Only one I'd buy a console for is gta, since it wont be out on pc. But they have said that gta5 wont be on the new consoles anyway so I'll stick with my 360.
If I get anything now it would be a playstation.

Well after that announcement I'll be getting myself a PS4, always had Xbox but they've buggered up this time.
Un less MicroSoft. Wake up asap the PS4 will quickly kill it off.

They're not allowing back compat, and their charging for their online service.
the ps4 is looking seriously tasty .. I 'm hoping the controller feels better quality than the last one. It looks like it has a touch pad and also potential cloud gaming for old games with the gaikai service.
Microsoft better take note

PS4 cannot have backwards compatibility unless they shoehorned an emulator in there. Purely because the PS3 used a different architecture. Having a paid online service also opens the door for early DLC and more PS4 exclusives because they will have more money to throw at the games companies. They are allowing people to lend games and I believe they are keeping the ability to sell 2nd hand games too (unconfirmed).

Unless you have an epic internet connection, Gaikai isn't going to be that great. Imagine things like Skyrim being streamed, the amount of time it would take just to look around is appalling. It has to get the signal that you want to move, do it, then render it, then send it back to you. Unless you are 3 feet from the server and the server is hard wired to your PS4, you're going to have some shocking amounts of lag.

It ought to need less than 10meg unless its going to be HD quality.
After all it's essentially just a Video being streamed. As for lag it could be as little as 20ms on a fibre connection (or less even).
Turn off interleaving and a half decent connection ought to do it.

That's all well and good for people on fibre. But how much of the country actually has fibre?

In or optional?
Over a million in, over 10 have the option (not counting virgin media)
That data is pretty old now, I'd need a few days to get the latest (but it'll hit well over 75% of homes by next year) it's also not that relevant, it's only the ping times that'll be massively effected for a lot of people, latency on copper could still be 50ms or lower which if its fine for a FPS is gonna be adequate for skyrim.
Matt-EUC
11-06-13, 07:56 PM
I used skyrim as an example of a game with reasonably high graphical fidelity. Think about heavy rain or crysis. Heavy rain being a QTE simulator it's very important to have the timing very accurate. As a side note, I'm on copper and I'm lucky if I get 120ms.
Spank86
11-06-13, 08:01 PM
Then you've got a fault on your line.
Or dodgy wifi. Even interleaving shouldn't push it that high alone.
It's seriously not an issue, not unless you've got superhuman reaction times (and before you answer that remember I've seen you ride).

So if you can do on PS like we can on x box now ie down loading games on HD then online play be same as we have now .
yes and the hd is removable and upgradable on the ps4.
Halo I`ll miss you. But then maybe the AI's rampancy has rub off on microsoft.
Not so much. "Foward on to Dawn" more Thats all folks....
Where were you the day Playstation put Xbox out of business? A day that will go down in history?

Sony Have Backward Compatibility, live is only £40 a year which for 5 free games (yes mainly Indie) a month as well aint bad, Sony have allowed games to be shared DRM free and i could swap with my friends, Sony is cheaper as well, What we are saying here is PS4 is far better, and Microsoft have shot them selfs in the foot, And no im not a fan boy i haven't owned a Playstation before , i've had a xbox 360 and have a gaming PC but I can see my self getting a PS4
I have had both xbox's, but I reckon I will also be heading to the PS4, and keeping my 360 for games like GTA5 which wont be on the new gen consoles. Wont get one until next year though I reckon.

I. Like you Tom, leaning towards PS4 but not planning to spend that amount of money on either... Not unless they give them 2 wheels and an engine too.
I'll see how things really pan out over the first year and make my decision then. Don't want to buy a Betamax.

12-06-13, 08:31 PM
I don't believe there is any way one manufacturer will go for DRM and the other wont. If sony don't do drm microsoft will simply turn it off. I reckon the XBox will continue to do very well but this is probably going to be the last round of traditional games consoles. If the steambox comes out of course that will really upset everything.
if you have a gaming pc steam box won't be of use.
Most of my pc,s games are steam there cheap ! regular great deals .
The PS4 reportedly has DDR 5 ram ..
XBox DDR 3 :S

Read a little more into that DDR3/5. Xbox isn't at that much of a disadvantage.
Games will be written for the Xbox first and ported to ps4. Which means ps4 will have to go through another layer to get to the game.
Oh and it's GDDR. There's a difference.

I know steambox wont matter if you have a gaming pc, but it will open up the market to new users (console fans). I have 360, ps3 and a good PC. I think I'll just build a new PC next year instead of getting a console. IMO they are considerably better and more flexible, not for everyone of course.

DDR5 doesn't exist.
The PS4 has GDDR5 which is different.
Or stop playing games and go out in the real world and have real conversations with real people while doing real activities instead.
We'll all live a lot longer once all these games machines stop being the focus of every waking minute.
Depends how you use the consoles but local multiplayer gaming does tick the boxes above. Its a shame the games developers have shifted the focus to online multiplayer. Games like fifa and black ops 1/2 work well :)

Group buy discount lol
Oh David (son) has said that microsoft will have a way of releasing the original owners dmr so second hand games can be used on XB1
(it's still a no mate, PS4 lol)
ps 4 for me I thinks
Xbox are locking the games to each console :-(
Looks like they have seen sense

Shame Sony's recent faux pas with the updates to ps3 will shake recent confidence.

We will have to read the T&Cs to see were you stand if they do.

Simple solution, buy a better PC.
Have been considering this. Bit out of touch with PC games though, when I used to play PC games about five years ago they were all just buggy ports of console games so I bought a PS3 as it was about the same price as a decent GFX card.
What are PC games like these days?
My son is a steam addic .
spends more time on it than x box
Matt-EUC
20-06-13, 10:19 AM
On pc you get all the buggy console ports. Plus anything you can find on steam. For this next generation however, the Xbox is running windows so the only buggy port will be to PS4. Although I'm not too sure whether it will be buggy or not as it is running pc architecture and is therefore easier to code for/port to.

Has been for over 20 years,
But the thing is you're not required to accept the changes, you just can't continue to use the service (live) if you don't.

That's A solution, it's certainly not the simple one.
And steam has all the same restrictions Microsoft wanted to put in place anyway.

So, who's opinion has changed on whether they'll get an Xbox One now?
I've never bought second hand games but I always sell mine on now so was hesitant about getting an Xbox one. The whole online 24hrs a day thing bugged me too. With the turn around, I'm more inclined to stick with xbox now.
Question is, where will they price band the games? They could easily hike up prices in order to offset the limitations of the second hand games market.
Matt-EUC

There was talk of implementing the option to charge the new owner of a game. But the decision is up to developers.

do you get multiplayer split screen games on the pc?

Clunk, saw this ages ago and it looks and sounds awesome but is actually on both consoles.
Glad Microsoft have turned around on some of their more interesting decisions. I think it's a good sign that we have a company listening to the consumer.
The reversal of their drm policy means I may well actually bother getting the Xbox, I rarely buy games but do use lovefilm to rent them frequently.

since the change of drm and always connected i will prob get one, but not straight away i dont think. Saying that the always on internet didnt really bother me as i normally am
I can see microsoft's end game of downloading cheaper versions of games rather than disc based distribution of games with an online exchange of "played" games.
Unless I'm missing something I haven't seen a second hand download section on android play store / itunes.
When you're talking about the current cost of games, people are less likely to spend that amount on " borrowing" a digital download game. Unless the cost of games falls a lot and the residual value of the digital download isnt zero, I think I'm sticking with disc based console for a bit longer. The value /cost of a game collection far exceeds that of the console generally.

That was due to the difficulty in coding for the PS3, they had all this power but no one knew how to utilize it. Xbox One and PS4 are running on near identical architectures so coding for the both is extremely similar. Meaning this gen that a dev can code a game for Xbox One, do minimal tweaks to get it working on PS4 and then stick a crap ton of super high res textures in as the GPU in the PS4 is much better. The original specs released by MS have been changed, they have had to lower the number of transistors on the Xbox One GPU due to failure rates and drop the clock speed by up to 300Mhz.
So im stil routing for PS4 .
